"480 Minutes" featuring new Eagles Of Death Metal

For the second straight week the show will feature fewer new songs than usual, in part due to the fact that fewer packages than usual (by about half -- I wonder if my last "480 Minutes" post offended some folks?!) arrived this week. Maybe it's just the pre-turkey slow down. Speaking of which, next Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, and since pretty much no one in the US works in offices on that day (and those that do are consumed with coming up cruel and brutish ways to murder the person who forced them to be in the office), so next week there will be a re-run. For those that do tune in, you will be treated to a classic episode, perhaps the Best Music of 2007 show? We'll see.

New music today from Maus Haus (San Francisco, CA), Belle and Sebastian (Glasgow, Scotland), Eagles Of Death Metal (Palm Desert, CA), Hush Arbors (Virginia), Listing Ship (Los Angeles, CA), The Loom (Brooklyn, NY), Mount Eerie (Anacortes, WA), and Quitzow (Hudson Valley, NY).

Please tune in to "480 Minutes" today and every Friday. The show runs live from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time, is rebroadcast starting at 8 p.m., then twice more on Saturday. On Saturday night at midnight we return to regular BAGeL Radio programming.

Chinese Dewmocracy

Beginning this Sunday (9/23/08) at 12:01 a.m., coupons for a free 20-ounce soda will be available for 24 hours on Dr. Pepper's Web site thanks to a promise the company made earlier this year stating that if the famously delayed Guns N' Roses album Chinese Democracy album was released in 2008, they'd buy everyone in America a soda.

Read more, not that I posted this for any other reason than as an excuse to share the titular pun.

"480 Minutes" - featuring new Decemberists

Today "480 Minutes" features quite a bit less new music than usual because certain radio promo companies are failing in their capacity as "filter." Instead of choosing good badns with good records these shady companies are simply promoting anything that people pay them to promote. While this might sound like good business, it is not -- every crap record they send out makes them less of a "trusted source," which hurts the good acts they promote. There was a time when I would get packages from promo company X and think, "Cool!" and look forward to listening to the contents. Now when I get packages from promo company X, they go to the bottom of my pile. For every strong release they send me, they send five things that are either inappropriate for an indie rock station or just plain crap, and for that reason those plummet on my list of priorities. Weeding through all of thatHot Topic faux-punk rock and boring, bland generic Coldplay/ Jack Johnson wastes hours and hours of music directors' time. It's almost criminal.

Over-booked promo companies -- you know who you are. Take a look in the mirror, give a listen to the stuff you are promoting, and remember you have a reputation to maintain. Or perhaps, by this point, a reputation to rehabilitate.

Bands & labels - check out the current roster (and overall amount of stuff) on the plates of the the radio promo companies you are considering using before you decide to throw your business their way.

New music today from The Decemberists (Portland, OR), A Block Of Yellow (London, Canada), Chop Chop (Cambridge, MA), Neil Gaiman (Minneapolis, MN), Red Wire Black Wire (Brooklyn, NY), Religious Knives (Brooklyn, NY), and The Rollo Treadway (Brooklyn, NY).

All The Lonely People...

...where do they all come from? Apparently from a city hospital in Liverpool.

After years of saying the title character of the Beatles song "Eleanor Rigby" was entirely ficticious, Paul McCartney's office may have revealed the truth behind the name.

According to the UK newspaper The Independent, a teacher of special needs children who taught an autistic boy to play "Yellow Submarine" on the piano wrote to McCartney to tell him that his song helped bring the child out of his limited world. In her letter she also asked for a half million pound ($800,000) donation for a facility for teaching music to children with learning difficulties and other disabilities. What she claims she got from McCartney's office was the document above, a page from a 1911 account log showing payments to hospital employees including a scullery (kitchen) maid by the name of E. Rigby.

At auction, the document may fetch the half million pounds the teacher was hoping for, despite McCartney's continued insistence that the Eleanor Rigby he wrote about was not based on a real person.

Recommendations For Phil

Recently I reconnected with a high school friend via Facebook and he asked for some music recommendations. Here is the off the top of my head list of my favorite new bands of the last few years that I sent him: The Wombats, The National, TV On The Radio, Okkervil River, Cloud Cult, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, The Heavenly States, Silversun Pickups, Cold War Kids, and The Thermals. Hope you find something in there you like, Phil!
