BAGeL Radio Turns 7 Years Old Today

Happy February!

Looking for something to do in SF tonight (Wednesday 2/3)? Make the descent into the one-time Speakeasy depths of Cafe du Nord (2174 Market Street near Sanchez) for The Rumble, the monthly indie rock party for which I am the resident DJ. The event is co-hosted by The Owl Mag and FutureSounds. and tonight guest DJ Carltone will rock with me. It's only $5 to get in, or RSVP for FREE admission here:

As mentioned above, Wednesday February 3rd also happens to mark 7 years to the day since BAGeL Radio debuted on the webwaves. At first it was fun diversion that allowed me and some friends listen to my music collection whilst at work. By the end of 2003 I noticed that people had tuned in from over 100 countries and over 150 U.S. municipalities. BAGeL Radio began getting noticed by music blogs and other media, and it dawned on me that I needed to pay more attention to the station as listenership ballooned. In 2004 we began the BAGeL Radio Presents... series of live gigs around San Francisco, followed by the California Homegrown Music Series, and, since 2007, The Rumble. In between were remote interviews, coverage in the New York Times, ABC News, KCRW,Wired Magazine, and Chris Anderson's book The Long Tail, awards, plus memorable remote broadcasts from Los Angeles (Venice Beach and Eagle Rock), New York (Manhattan and Queens), Austin, TX. during SXSW, poolside in Palm Springs, CA., Japan (Nagano), Freeport, IL., Roscoe, IL., Boston, MA., Guerneville, CA., and Norway (Oslo).

The party tonight also celebrates 5 years since the launch of premiere Bay Area music resource The Owl Mag. The official pitch from The Owl Folks:

Bring on the music, bring on the party! We're celebrating The Owl Mag's 5 year anniversary and making moves. February's Rumble will be at the spectacular Cafe Du Nord. To get your blood pumping, we've got live sets from Jaguar Love (Portland, OR), My First Earthquake, and Butterfly Bones. Resident DJ master - BAGeL Ted (celebrating 7-years of Internet bliss) - will be on the decks. Endless pleasure awaits you - expect giveaways, specials, and debauchery.

Hope to see you there.

2 BAGeL Radio Events This Week...

...Let's get ready to BAGeL!

First there's The Rumble on Wednesday, then there's the BAGeL Radio Half Dozenth Birthday Party on Saturday.

February 4th is the first Wednesday of the month and that means THE RUMBLE: SAN FRANCISCO at Harlot.

This month we have a lot of special guests such as THE BAY AREA ROLLER GIRLS, who will kick off their season at The Rumble. Equally out of control and dangerous will be the live performance by LA's THE RINGERS, a band that throws furniture out of hotel room windows because their M&M's aren't the right colors. Think "Panama" era VAN HALEN meets IGGY & THE STOOGES and you're getting close.

On the flip side of the bill is the infectious, fun, San Francisco band that dares-you-to-not-dance, MUSIC FOR ANIMALS.

DJ OMAR of POPSCENE will join me (BAGeL Radio) on the turntables.

We'll also be giving away FREE VESTALIFE "Ladybug" iPod docking stations to select lucky party goers.

Even more Free stuff - Free Pilsner for the first 40 SonicLiving RSVPs that come thru. And, $1 Pilsners from 8pm to 10pm.

All of this for $5, or FREE if you RSVP at SONICLIVING here:

HARLOT is at 46 Minna Street in San Francisco.

Then on Saturday February 7th the little station that could turns six years old -- join us at BOTTOM OF THE HILL (1233 17th Street @ Missouri, SF) to celebrate. The show will feature live performances by BAGeL Radio faves BIRDMONSTER (who are always awesome live), the SF music export that's about to conquer Europe and then quite naturally the world: RAILCARS, and one-man band extraordinaire, RICKY LEE ROBINSON (think garage rock with Motown seasoning), plus guest DJ Cory of ABSOLUTELY KOSHER RECORDS and free cupcakes.

The birthday event is 18+, tickets are $10 (and you can buy them in advance without incurring any fees HERE), and you can win tickets by getting in touch when you hear BIRDMONSTER, RAILCARS, or RICKY LEE ROBINSON during this Friday's edition of "480 Minutes" on BAGeL Radio. No presents, please, only your presence is requested.

Did I mention there will be free cupcakes?

See you Wednesday & Saturday!

Cory's Back on Election Day/ The Rumble 11-5

First of all, tomorrow is Election Day, so go out and VOTE. For those of you in the Bay Area, here is an excellent Election Guide. Please make sure to check out the recommendations therein, print them out, and bring them to the voting booth with you -- this election is about more than kicking the national Republican Party to the curb.

Here at BAGeL Radio we'll be keeping our election anxiety at bay by concentrating on the return of DJ Cory Brown. Cory runs Absolutely Kosher Records and MISRA Records and DJed on BAGeL Radio regularly in 2006 and 2007. After 13 months in the wilderness his show returns tomorrow, Tuesday November 4th, at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. The show is rebroadcast at 10 p.m. Pacific Time.

On Wednesday night 11/5 come out to celebrate the Obama victory with a Rumble party for the ages. Bringing their dirty, dark brand of night music into Harlot this month are The Blacks from New York City.

On the turntables this week is special guest DJ Mario Muse of Susperia as well as resident DJ, BAGeL Ted (BAGeL Radio).

It's FREE if you bother to RSVP at

Harlot is at 46 Minna Street in San Francisco. Doors @ 8PM. $5 without RSVP.

Is it going to rain? Yes. Is that going to stop you? Hell no!

The September Rumble

While I forgot to post about it here, the word still got out and there were plenty of fine-looking folks out at The Rumble last night -- thanks for coming! That was a fun one. Thanks to Shawn of The Matches for a fun DJ set, and for dressing up as Heath Ledger's Joker (photos coming!) in a nurse uniform, that was awesome. So were DJ Omar's rock sets -- I'm used to hearing his excellent electronic-heavy sets, so last night's guitar-heavy sets were a most pleasant surprise.

And as usual, Magic Bullets had the crowd (myself included) smiling and dancing around like fools -- so good. So, so good.

Thanks also to Rumble co-conspirators The Owl Mag, TankFarm/FutureSounds, SonicLiving, and, of course our wonderful venue, Harlot.

Looking forward to the next one (Wednesday 10/1/08) which will feature an intimate mini-set from The Ettes plus surprise guest DJs who may or may not dress up like super villains.

"480 Minutes" - March, We Hardly Knew Ye

Is it really the end of March already? Seriously?
Well, the one good thing about another month ending is that the first Wednesday of the next month is coming up soon, and that means it's time for The Rumble. The next one is this coming Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008 at Harlot and will feature guest DJ Omar of Popscene plus free vodka Red Bulls from 8-9:30. RSVP here for free admission, or click the cassette image.

Today's "480 Minutes" show will feature new songs from The Breeders (Dayton, OH), The Wombats (1st US release, Liverpool, UK), Tapes 'n Tapes (Minneapolis, MN), The Black Keys (Akron, OH), The Black Box Rebellion (Brussels, Belgium), R.E.M. (Athens, GA), Finest Dearest (San Francisco, CA), Doctors & Dealers (Stockholm, Sweden), Foals (Oxford, UK), Mono Taxi (London, UK), Cut Copy (Melbourne, Australia), Eric Avery (of Jane's Addiction, Los Angeles, CA), Moby (New York, NY), Neva Dinova (Omaha, NE), The Parlor Mob (NJ), plus Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (UK) and The Raconteurs (Detroit, MI).

By the way, the new R.E.M. album does not suck. In fact, it's really quite good. Many echoes of and nods to their glory days (which for me ended in 1992 with Automatic For the People, and my favorite R.E.M. albums remain Reckoning and Murmur), both musically and lyrically (the words "end of the world" are featured prominantly and repeatedly in the track "I'm Gonna DJ," while Michael Stipe sings something about "feel gravity's pull" in "Sing For The Sumbarine"), yet somehow it doesn't sound like R.E.M. during the Reagan years. I can see some folks, the ones who don't listen closely enough, thinking that R.E.M. is simply returning to safe ground it has already covered. To my ears it's all too urgent and rocking and raw to charge them with such a crime -- on most of the songs it's possible they were actually recorded live, with the band in the same room together, without massive overdubs.

I can't believe I may soon (after several more listens, of course) be able say I love an R.E.M. album again. It's nice that the chance exists.

Please tune in to "480 Minutes" today and every Friday. The show runs live from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time, the is rebroadcast starting at 7p.m., then twice more on Saturday. On Saturday night at midnight we return to regular BAGeL Radio programming.
