"480 Minutes" - Atypical

If you are heading to Coachella or know anyone who is, do not miss our indispensable Coachella Tips list.

Today will be an atypical edition of 480 Minutes -- usually this show highlights all of the latest playlist additions being added to the station rotation next week. Today, however, we will unveil no new music and instead focus on recent playlist additions plus some all-time great songs.

Also today we will be giving away tickets to the show we are promoting tonight with our friends at Soma FM -- Love Is All (Gothenberg, Sweden), Princeton (Eagle Rock, CA), and Butterfly Bones (SF, CA) @ The Rickshaw Stop. Get in touch when you hear a song by any of those bands during today's 480 Minutes program for chance to win a pair of tickets to the show, or buy tix in advance. April is a little ridiculous for shows in the Bay Area, but I'm going to bite the bullet and try to see every last one. Or at least the ones listed below in the Bay Area Gig eList.

Please tune in today and every Friday to 480 Minutes between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific Time.

Texas-related Rerun

Good morning!

Good news: BAGeL Radio is going to Austin, TX, for the South By Southwest (aka SXSW) Music Festival!

Not such good news: as a result of our travels, this week's edition of 480 Minutes will be a rerun.

Better news (but still not as good as the news about going to SXSW): the rerun is an episode you likely never heard, and certainly never heard in it's entirety. Throughout the day that this episode aired live, we had network difficulties, so except for the most obsessive 480 Minutes listeners, most are unlikely to have caught this one. The playlist included so much great new music that the show ended up quite good despite the dejected (due to technical difficulties) mood of the host.

If you find yourself wandering around Austin aimlessly on Thursday during the day, please stop by The Beauty Bar. I will be DJing the 3rd Annual Bay Area Takeover from 11:30 a.m. - 6 p.m., so stop by and say hi. I'll be the guy with the headphones who is not the sound engineer. The event features some terrific Bay Area bands including Man/Miracle and Geographer.

Also, we will be updating our Twitter feed (http://twitter.com/bagelradio) regarding which shows/events we attend, so add us to your "following."

Have a lovely weekend, everyone.

Ted

"480 Minutes" - Once Again Taking IM Requests!

Hello friends, enemies, listeners, readers, thinkers, creationists (you know, the folks picking the textbooks for our school kids), and all those in between.

Last night my brother and sister went to a Broadway show and sat a few rows seats from U2 lead singer Bono. Shocking, I know, but true. They both told me. Independently of one another. That's how I know they are not lying.

So today marks the return of a part of 480 Minutes that is meaningful to some of you and for others, not so much: contacting the DJ via Instant Messenger. You can make requests, comment on songs that are playing, rag on songs that never should have been played...whathaveyou. Try it, you might like it. Just let the DJ know who you are and where you are IMing from.

Today 480 Minutes will debut new songs by from Malachai (Bristol, England), Polysics (Japan), Seth Augustus (San Francisco, CA), Cold War Kids (Long Beach, CA), Freelance Whales (Queens, NY), Hanne Hukkelberg (Oslo, Norway), Chet (Victoria, BC, Canada), Xiu Xiu (Brooklyn, NY), Laarks (Eau Claire, WI), Phantogram (Saratoga Springs, NY), Dune Tran (San Francisco, CA), Bettie Serveert (Amsterdam, Netherlands), and the new side project by Eddie Argos (of Art Brut) and Dyan Valdes (of The Blood Arm) called Everybody Was In the French Resistance...Now! (Los Angeles, CA)

Please tune in today and every Friday to 480 Minutes between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific Time. If that time doesn't work for you, the show is rebroadcast on Friday nights and then twice on Saturday, so you can get your fix then.

480 Minutes - Rumble-related Rerun!

Good morning!

Many many thanks to everyone who came out to Cafe du Nord on Wednesday specifically for the BAGeL Radio 7th birthday party. I really appreciate it. It makes me giddy to look back at the more than 300 (!) episodes of 480 Minutes, plus interviews and BAGeL Radio on-air acoustic performances. Who knew the little independent station that could...would...reach so many people? Not I, my friends. Not I.

Thanks also to everyone who came out to see the bands, the event co-sponsors (The Owl Mag and Future Sounds), my co-DJ (Carlton), and of course the bands (Jaguar Love, My First Earthquake, and Butterfly Bones).

Due in part to that party, which also celebrated the 5th anniversary of The Owl Mag and our first Rumble at Cafe du Nord, I didn't get nearly enough sleep this week nor have nearly enough time to compile a new episode of 480 Minutes, so today's program will be a rerun of a previously broadcast show. Next Friday (2/12) we'll have a new show featuring new stuff from Malachai (Bristol, England), Polysics (Japan), Seth Augustus (San Francisco, CA), and Cold War Kids (Long Beach, CA). See you then!

Oh, and if you are on Facebook please join the BAGeL Radio group. Just search for "bagelradio" in the search window, or click this link. Thanks!

"480 Minutes" - New Spoon!

Hello and happy Friday.

This week I'd like to call your attention to an anti Karl Rove project by bands who are pissed off about the idea of the man behind Dubyah's political career cashing in further on his destruction of the country by publishing a book. It's called Project: Courage and Consequence. Remember when a couple of editors of The Nation published a book called Going Rouge the same day that Sarah Palin's book, Going Rogue, hit the newsstands? This is the same idea, only with noisy rock bands instead of a collection of essays.

Today 480 Minutes will debut new songs as well a few that have been around for a while but have not yet had their BAGeL Radio debut. The show will feature music from Beach House (Baltimore, MD), Charlotte Gainsbourg (Paris, France), Eels (Los Angeles, CA), The Films (Charleston, SC), Four Tet (London England), Galactic (New Orleans, LA), Nouvelle Vague (Paris, France), Spoon (Austin, TX), Surfer Blood (West Palm Beach, FL), Vampire Weekend (New York, NY), and Yawn (Chicago, IL).

Please tune in today and every Friday to 480 Minutes between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific Time.

"480 Minutes" - RIP Jay Reatard

Hello. We are back, as in really back, not just back from vacation, but back and armed with new music to play for you.

Before we get to that, a quick note about the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Haiti needs our help. The country needs disaster relief desperately, and there are a couple of very easy ways you can help. One is to text 'HAITI' to 90999, which will show up as a $10 charge on your phone bill, and the $10 will go directly to the American Red Cross to help with disaster relief. Another really easy and novel way to donate is via iTunes. Just click here and you will be able to use your iTunes account to donate $5 - $250 to the American Red Cross. Google has also set up a donations page. Please give what you can. And in case you are wondering how Haiti got so poor, it's not because it made a "pact to the devil," as "Christian" broadcaster Pat Robertson asserted to his 700 Club flock (true story). Here's one take on the history that brought Haiti to this point.

In other misery, Jay Reatard died in his sleep in his Memphis apartment this week. He was 29 years old. Check out the documentary below.

Turning attention to the music...

"480 Minutes" - Unplanned Rerun

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I was under the weather and unable to produce an original show for this week, so today will be a rerun of a previously broadcast edition of 480 Minutes. In fact, there will be 4 different reruns run back-to-back-to-back-to-back, for those of you who might enjoy 30+ straight hours of me, babbling. The first runs from 9 a.m.-5p.m. Pacific Time. Do tune in.

There was a grand plan to follow-up to last week's smash hit "Best Music of 2009" edition of 480 Minutes with a "Best Music of the Oughts" edition this week. Then I got sick. Show fail. Alas, that special edition will have to wait until the new year.

Please check out the Best Music of the Year lists below. If you click a song name, it will take you to the song in iTunes, if you click an album name, that will take you to the corresponding CD on Amazon. If you prefer CD Universe, please use this link. You can also find an iMix of our Top Albums of 2009 (each represented by one song), and iMixies for our Top 50 Songs of 2009 as well as Top Songs 51-100. Using any of those links at bagelradio.com to buy music helps the artists and scores a commission for BAGeL Radio, so please, try to use our links as the your for all of your purchases (even non-music goods on Amazon!).

Thanks for sharing another great year of music with us here at BAGeL Radio. I saw some snarky year-end lists this year that stopped at 7 or 8 instead of the standard minimum 10, because, list authors claimed, there just wasn't that much great music released in 2009. Isn't it nice to have a clear view of just how wrong those who put snark ahead of the music really are?

Anyway, enjoy the reruns and sifting through the year-end lists, and best wishes to you and yours for a happy and healthy new year. See you in 2010.

Ted

Year-end shows to see in SF:

"480 Minutes" - The Best Music of 2009

Good morning and welcome to the The Best Music of 2009 edition of "480 Minutes." Click here to see results from previous years.

At 10 a.m. Pacific Time we will start a countdown with the #50 song of 2009, and I expect we'll get to #1 near 1:30 p.m. After that will be an out-of-order playlist of songs #51 to 100, arranged for maximum aural pleasure. Also included in that post-Top 50 set will be a countdown of the top 30 albums of 2009, plus the top 15 local San Francisco Bay Area releases of the year.

There was science involved in divining the rankings, including scouring all of our 2009 playlists to determine spin counts, how many songs from albums got played, etc. Truth be told, the parts not covered by science (including the hacking away with a machete before surgically paring the lists down their final form, plus final touches and tweaks), were all made with an almost complete disregard for objectivity.

2009 was another banner year for music as the Dubyah Hangover and Great Recession continue on. If you don't believe me, that's all the more reason to tune in today.

It is recommend that you take notes while listening so you can go buy some of these amazing records over the weekend. This will not only make you cooler, it will make you a better person for having supported mainly independent artists and independent labels who need your money to keep doing what they do -- make great music. It could also make your friends cooler if you decide to buy some of this music for them -- music makes an excellent holiday gift.

Buy music using these links
or or
to help support the artists and kick back a nickel to BAGeL Radio

If you miss any portion of the show during it's original air-time, don't fret. It will be re-broadcast again tonight (Friday December 11th, 2009) beginning at 5p.m. Pacific, and then again twice tomorrow (Saturday December 12th, 2009) at 9 a.m. and 5p.m. Pacific.

Due to Digital Millennium Copyright restrictions, I cannot publish the list of the Top 100 Songs of 2009 until after this program and re-runs have aired, so expect to see a blog post published to this space on Sunday containing a complete run-down of the Top 100 Songs, Top 30 Albums, and Top Bay Area releases of 2009.

Please tune in every Friday to "480 Minutes," which airs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time. Due to the "Best of..." nature of this edition, requests are completely pointless today, but if you have comments, corrections, criticisms, please do get in touch via e-mail (feedback@bagelradio.com).

Also, feel free to post your Best Music of the Year selections in the comments section below.

Thanks, and enjoy the show!

480 Minutes - Vote For Me And I'll Set You Free!

Hello! Please take a moment to vote for me in the SF Bay Guardian Favorite Bay Area DJs contest. I haven't won since 2007, so I'm due! You can vote for me in the Favorite Bay Area DJ: Bar/Lounge category (Ted Leibowitz, The Rumble @ Harlot) and the Favorite Bay Are DJ: Satellite/Internet Radio (Ted Leibowitz, BAGeL Radio, 480 Minutes, bagelradio.com) categories. Thanks!

Today 480 Minutes will debut no songs. Seriously. None. It's that time of year where the submissions pile up and we just don't care -- we're too busy going back through the thousands of great songs released this year. Said thousands have been whittled down to a few hundred (the list is at 157 at the moment), with the ultimate goal being to devine the Top 50 Songs of 2009. Those 50 will be featured, in reverse order, during the Friday 12/11 edition of 480 Minutes beginning at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. The Best Music Of The Year edition is always popular, so please be sure to get in early to ensure you don't get shut out by the listener limits. Or buy a Live365 Preferred Membership. It will cost you $6 a month if you sign up for a year, $8 a month if you sign up for a quarter, and you won't have to worry about getting shut out of BAGeL Radio.

So, getting back to the original point of that paragraph no new stuff, but lots of recent stuff and classics as well. I can ramble, can't I?

Please tune in today and every Friday to 480 Minutes between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific Time.

480 Minutes - Columbine Raincoat

Today it's going to rain...at least here in the San Francisco Bay Area. Last time it rained I busted out a giant umbrella and got soaked anyway. This time I've busted out the giant cat hair-covered Columbine raincoat -- not getting soaked this time, Ms. Nature. Sorry. I may scare a few children, but I will be dry.

Today 480 Minutes will debut songs by Audra Mae (Los Angeles, CA via OK), Capgun Coup (Omaha, NE), The Cribs (West Yorkshire, England), The King of Rocksprings (Brooklyn, NY), Hot Lava (Richmond, VA), Sleep Whale (Denton, TX), and Vampire Weekend (New York, NY).

Please tune in today and every Friday to 480 Minutes between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific Time.

Post Script: because next Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, most BAGeL Radio listeners will be home in triptophane-induced comas, so there will be no new 480 Minutes. Rest assured we will use our food coma wisely as we cobble together our year-end Best Of lists in between snoozes.

480 Minutes - Six Weeks Of Oughts Left

The second Friday in November (today) has historically been the cut-off for when we listen to new music for consideration for our year-end lists. Seeing as we have a couch full of unopened packages plus a playlist of 547 not yet reviewed songs, methinks we will have to extend that deadline by a week. Hopefully we will still be able to cobble together said year-end lists and put them all into a show on Friday, 12/11. That year-end show is always one of the most popular of the year, so pushing it to 12/18 when people may already be leaving for holiday vacations is something to avoid.

Speaking of new music, today 480 Minutes will debut songs by Alec Ounsworth (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, Philadelphia, PA), Glenn Tilbrook (Squeeze, London, England), Julian Casablancas (The Strokes, New York, NY), Spiral Stairs (Pavement, Stockton, CA), Weezer (Los Angeles, CA), White Denim (Austin, TX), We All Have Hooks For Hands (Sioux Falls, SD), and Frightened Rabbit (Selkirk, Scotland). Let us know how you feel about the new stuff by sending feedback to feedback@bagelradio.com

Please tune in today and every Friday to 480 Minutes between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific Time.

480 Minutes - The World Is A More Sensible And Joyful Place...

...when the Yankees are World Series Champions. I know, many of you don't like the fact, but it's true. Think about it -- Yankees win, Democrat in the White House. Last time the Yankees were winning a championships there was a Democrat in the White House. Time before that, in the late 1970s...Democrat in the White House. Coincidence? I think not.

Thanks for all of the congrats, especially from those of you I know are not fans of the 2009 World Series Champion New York Yankees. That was really sweet of you guys.

Anyway, tons of new music for you today, I am sure we can all agree that that is a good thing. New stuff getting it's BAGeL Radio debut today includes The Asteroid Galaxy Tour (Copenhagen, Denmark), Brilliant Colors (San Francisco, CA), Cold Cave (Philadelphia, PA), Drink Up Buttercup (Philadelphia, PA) (see, no hard feelings, Philly!), Letting Up Despite Great Faults (Los Angeles, CA), Locksley (Madison, WI), The Rentals (Los Angeles, CA), and Wolfmother (Sydney, Australia).

480 Minutes - A Fall Classic Rerun

Today's program will be a rerun of a previously broadcast edition of 480 Minutes. This happens when the Yankees are in the World Series. It cannot be helped. Go ANSKY!

480 Minutes will be back with an all-new edition next Friday, 11/6.

So for this Rerun we are going to try something a little different -- instead of one 480 Minutes program repeated throughout today and tomorrow we will have 4 different previously recorded 480 Minutes programs play back-to-back-to-back-to-back. Serving suggestion: go buy a case of the energy drink of your choice and listen to hosted BAGeL Radio programming for 40 straight hours beginning at 9 a.m. Pacific Time (11 a.m. Mountain, 10 a.m. Central, 11 a.m. Eastern, 17:00 Greenwich Mean Time). If you guys like the strung together hosted shows we will consider doing this more often, perhaps during the overnight hours when a host to keep you company might be nice. Please let us know what you think at feedback@bagelradio.com.

"480 Minutes" 10/23/09

Well it's late October and that means Halloween, playoff baseball, and leaves a-turnin' colors. Even here in the Bay Area this year, the leaves are a-turnin' colors. It's pretty. It's also pretty amazing. Not as amazing as the baseball playoffs have been (umpiring notwithstanding), but amazing nonetheless. Go ANSKY!

Also amazing was the Treasure Island Music Festival (photos) last weekend. Sunday was perhaps the single strongest festival lineups I've ever seen. Highlights were Bob Mould playing pretty much all Sugar and Hüsker Dü songs, The Walkmen (they are hit or miss and no doubt this was a 'hit' performance), Spiral Stairs (aka Scott Kannberg of Pavement fame), and The Flaming Lips who were more than just the icing on the festival cake. It would have been worth standing outside in the cold all day just for them. If you've never seen The Flaming Lips take my advice and see them at your next opportunity. Even if you don't like their music, the live show is a spectacle that must be experienced. Take a day off work, drive a couple of hundred miles, fly...whatever it takes, next time they play anywhere near you, go. No excuses.

Today on BAGeL Radio we will feature brand-spanking new music from Man/Miracle (Oakland, CA), Middle Distance Runner (Washington, DC), Thao (Oakland, CA), and They Might Be Giants (Brooklyn, NY).

Please tune in today and every Friday to 480 Minutes between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific Time.

"480 Minutes" - New Flaming Lips

What are you going to be for Halloween this year? The wife is all over me about picking a costume, and the best thing I can can come up with is, "I just wanna be me!" That...will...not...do. Any ideas?

Today on BAGeL Radio we will feature brand-spanking new music from Flaming Lips (Norman, OK), The Authors (Montreal, Canada), CF Donohoe (Glasgow/Dallas), Clare & The Reasons (Brooklyn, NY), Exene Cervenka (X), Free Energy (Philadelphia, PA), The Ghost Is Dancing (Toronto, Canada), James Husband (Athens, GA), and Kurt Vile (Philadelphia, PA).

As always, your feedback on the latest playlist additions and whatever else is on your mind will be most appreciated Write to us at feedback@bagelradio.com, and please take the poll below. Also, I don't know how much longer I can bring myself to argue with "flat earthers" on the subject of radio's promotional value, but I felt the need to reply to a piece published in The Huffington Post that might as well come out of the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) press office. The HuffPo didn't deem my edited-for-space comment worthy of publishing, so I published the comment as a whole here. Please read it and, whenever you hear "the music industry" aka the RIAA aka the major labels complain on behalf of artists, remember that "the "the music industry" aka the RIAA aka the major labels have been the vampires feasting on the blood of artists for decades.

Please tune in today and every Friday to 480 Minutes between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific Time.

"480 Minutes" - The Classic Rock Edition

Why "The Classic Rock Edition?" I don't know. Maybe it's because the wife went to see Foreigner at the Fillmore last night, so when I was compiling the playlist that influenced me. Never fear, there is no Foreigner in today's playlist, but there are songs from classic rock juke box heroes like The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, and Queen, amongst others.

More importantly, today on BAGeL Radio we will feature brand-spanking new music from Amazing Baby (Brooklyn, NY), The Black Hollies (Jersey City, New Jersey), The Gossip (Portland, Oregon), The Headlights (Champaign, IL), Hockey (Portland, Oregon), Noah And The Whale (London, England), Pearl Jam (Seattle, WA), Pet Lions (Chicago, IL), A Place To Bury Strangers (Brooklyn, NY), Times New Viking (Columbus, OH), Two Hours Traffic (Prince Edward Island, Canada), Vivian Girls (Brooklyn, NY), and Windmill (London, England), featuring perhaps the finest cover art of 2009 :
As always, we'd love to hear your feedback on the latest playlist additions and whatever else is on your mind. Write to us at feedback@bagelradio.com.

Please tune in today and every Friday to 480 Minutes between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific Time.

Many thanks to DJ Aaron Axelsen of Live 105/Popscene and DJ Tom Thump, as well as to the bands who performed, Man/Miracle and Fitz & The Tantrums, for making our final Rumble at Harlot great fun. It will be sad to leave our home venue of the past two years, but we look forward to getting started at the Rumble SF's new home, The Rickshaw Stop, on Wednesday 11/4.
