"480 Minutes" - Rich Trott's Birthday Edition

Yes, it's true, some 1400 songs crossed my desk this month. And there are still packages to be opened. Sadly, as has been the case in recent months, most of the submissions were not worth the time or effort. Within the toxic stew of faux punk, weak post-techno hangover drivel, "Ska" bands that have clearly never heard of Derrick Morgan nor perhaps even 2 Tone, plus some limp Americana (get over it, it's country, even with highfalutin whiney-ass lyrics), there were some quality releases.

Atop of the gem list is the new album from Future Of The Left (Cardiff, Wales), whose debut a couple of years ago was very good, and this one is even better. Also new stuff today from Jets Overhead (Victoria, BC, Canada), Kasabian (Leicester, England), The Minus 5 (Seattle, WA) and Young Fresh Fellows (Seattle, WA), Ohbijou (Toronto, Canada), Peggy Sue (Brighton, England), The Rural Alberta Advantage (Toronto, Canada), Samantha Crain & The Midnight Shivers (Shawnee, OK), Street Sweeper Social Club (Los Angeles, CA), Those Darlins (Murfreesboro, TN), White Rabbits (Brooklyn, NY), and Wilco (Chicago, IL).

Today the show begins a 30 minutes early (experiment!): 8:30 a.m. Pacific Time (11:30 a.m. Eastern, 18:30 in the UK). Please tune in today and every Friday to 480 Minutes and let me know if you like the earlier time slot, might prefer it start even earlier, or if you prefer it the old way.

At about 2 p.m. there will be a special section of the show called "Trott's Treats," in honor of the big birthday of long-time friend to the station and Palace Family Steak House leader Rich Trott. PFSH is responsible for the first and still best BAGeL Radio jingle ever recorded. Happy birthday, Rich!

"480 Minutes" - The Crazy Busy Week Rerun Edition

Between The Bay Bridged board of advisors meeting, The Lost season finalé, and DJing the Loquat show last night, there simply was no time this week to assemble the 480-minute marathon BAGeL Radio Friday live broadcast. I did review tons of new music including Apostle of Hustle, Black Hat Brigade, Black Moth Super Rainbow, The Breeders, Circus Devils, Conor Oberst And The Mystic Valley Band, Depeche Mode, The Do, Double Dagger, Eagle And Talon, The High Strung, Jake Cherif, Jarvis Cocker, Mariyln Manson (not safe for work!), Peaches, and Popup (either I only got through the letter P in my listening this week, or the second half of the alphabet bands are slacking!).

I look forward to sharing all that and more with you next Friday (5/22).

In the meantime today's program will be a rerun of the Friday the 13th edition of "480 Mainutes" from March which featured the BAGeL Radio debuts of new music from Obits (Brooklyn, NY), Dan Deacon (Baltimore, MD), Benjy Ferree (Washington, DC), Gliss (Los Angeles, CA), Bishop Allen (Brooklyn, NY), Eula (New Haven, CT), An Horse (Brisbane, Australia), The Hopefuls (Minneapolis, MN), Lemon Sun (Los Angeles, CA), Stardeath And White Dwarfs (Norman, OK), Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band (Seattle, WA).

Here is my one gig photo from the week -- Loquat @ Cafe du Nord last night (Thursday, May 14th). I went directly to the venue from work, so I did not have my real camera, but the iPhone takes some amazing photos, and this one is not too bad considering the low light conditions:

"480 Minutes" - Taxes Pay For Roads and Power Lines and Education...

Did you see the signs those wonderful "Real Americans" were flying at their poorly attended, disorganized, misguided "Tea Parties" this week? The last president increased spending more than any other president in history, and all the while the results of the conservative core economic ideologies of deregulation, trickle down economics, and "greed is good" finally severely damaged the global economy. The new president, barely 100 days in office, has lowered taxed on the vast majority of the folks who showed up to these events...events protesting government spending. Where have these people been for the last 8 years? It just doesn't make any sense.

What are you going to do? Hate-filled people who fear the unknown and keep themselves willfully ignorant of reality (including social progress) need a demon. FOX News is happy to play on fear and whip people into a frenzy over nothing. Then FOX 'reported on' the events they helped create claiming the events were spawned by a grassroots movement, not by a corporate lobbyist funded organization run by former Republican House Majority Leader Dick Armey of Texas.

The good news is that even after two weeks of non-stop promotion on FOX News, the non-event drew embarrassingly low crowds compared with the promoters' own projections. Perhaps ultimately George W. Bush did us all a favor by exposing those core conservative principles to be nothing more than propaganda that sounds good to the have-nots, but in reality works strictly for the haves.

Anyway...enough politics. Let's talk about music.

Today's show features new music from Silversun Pickups (Los Angeles, CA), Alma Matter (Bakersfield, CA), Fever Ray (Stockholm, Sweden), Floating Action (Black Mountain, NC), Harlem Shakes (Brooklyn, NY), Immaculate Machine (Victoria BC, Canada), Odawas (Berkeley, CA), The Peekers (Shreveport, LA), Peter Bjorn & John (Stockholm, Sweden), and Pomegranates (Cincinnati, OH).

Please tune in this and every Friday to "480 Minutes," which runs live from 12 noon to 8 p.m. Eastern Time, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific.

480 Minutes - Payin' The Bills Rerun

Happy Friday, folks.

I started a new contract job this week and it has kept me mighty busy, leaving little time to listen to new music and put together a new show for this Friday. Gotta pay the bills! So, instead of new live show today, you will be treated to a rerun. A really good re-run.

I will try to put together an abbreviated, concentrated hosted show for Monday containing this week's playlist additions. Who knows, maybe we'll call it something silly like "120 Minutes." Check this space Sunday night for an update.

No e-mails or IMs today, please, I won't be available to chat.

Here is my one gig photo from the week -- Green Day playing for the first time in 3 years, and they did so at a tiny (for them) 400-capacity venue, The Independent in SF:

"480 Minutes" -The April Fool

Happy April. I ask you -- how can it possibly be April? April is Spring, baseball, rain, post-winter...it doesn't seem quite time for any of those things. Calendar says it's time go dig out the old ball glove and find someone with whom to have a catch -- who am I to argue?

"480 Minutes" - March Out

And...we're back! Yes, a live edition of "480 Minutes" following our week at SXSW. That was fun, particularly DJing the Bay Area Takeover event that featured French Miami and The Heavenly States, and DJing/MCing the Sonicbids Official SXSW Party that featured Hot Lava, Sprengjuhollin, Dead Confederate, and Gliss.

Another highlight was getting to see Frank Turner twice in one day -- and we get to see him here in San Francisco once again tomorrow night at Thee Parkside...if I am up for it. I returned home from Austin with what our SXSW Interactive friends were calling "South By SARS," so if I sound a bit congested today, you will know why.

Next Wednesday, April 1st, is the next Rumble @ Harlot featuring guest DJ Vin Sol plus live mini-sets by Simon Says No! (from Oslo, Norway), and Leopold & His Fiction. RSVP here for free admission.

Also next Wednesday at noon Pacific, 8p.m. in the UK, will be the debut of a brand new weekly hosted show on BAGeL Radio, "At Home With DJ Unfit For Work." Presenting from his London home with his distinctly British take on great music old, new, and in between will be your host, djunfitforwork. Give it a listen (Wednesday, 4/1) and please send in your feedback.

Today's show features new music from Greater California (Long Beach, CA), Beast (Montreal, Canada), City Light (Seattle, WA), A Camp (Malmo, Sweden), Death Becomes Even The Maiden (Columbia, South Carolina), Swan Lake (Montreal, Canada), PJ Harvey & John Parrish (England), The French Semester (Los Angeles, CA), The Decemberists (Portland, OR), Gentlemen Reg (Toronto, Canada), Röyksopp (Bergen, Norway), Dish (Deland, FL), Bob Mould (Washington, DC), Boy Least Likely To (England), Doves (Manchester, England), 1990s (Glasgow, Scotland), The Soft Pack (Los Angeles, CA), Pontiak (Charlottesville, Virginia), Grand Lake (Oakland, CA), The Coathangers (Atlanta, GA), Telekenisis! (Seattle, Washington), Thunderheist (Toronto, Canada), Ice Palace (Minneapolis, MN), and Hatcham Social Club (London, England).

Please tune in this and every Friday to "480 Minutes," which runs live from 12 noon to 8 p.m. Eastern Time, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific. You can make requests, comments, corrections, criticisms, praise, etc. via:

"480 Minutes" - Pets Are A Socialist Luxury

Did you see what the California legislative Republicans almost did? They almost brought the 8th largest economy in the world to it's knees. They almost caused great harm to the many already suffering Californians. The Governator tried to add a 9% tax to veterinary services. Sorry, Fido, no shots for you this year...we can't afford to take you to the vet!

Anyway, today's show will feature new music from Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Brooklyn, NY), U2 (Dublin, Ireland), Mirah (Portland, OR), These Are Powers (Chicago, IL), The Soundtrack of Our Lives (Göteborg, Sweden), Mumiy Troll (Vladivostok, Russia), Telepathe (Brooklyn, NY), Everything Absent Or Distorted (Denver, CO), The Takeover UK (Pittsburgh, PA), The Laureates (Chicago, IL), Marissa Nadler (Boston, MA), Youth Group (Sydney, Australia), and Lucky Jesus (San Francisco, CA).

"480 Minutes" - The Suddenly Unemployed Edition

For you Bay Area listeners there are a couple of good shows this weekend: tonight at the Hotel Utah it's Raised By Robots and Supervinos VTO (tickets here), then tomorrow night at Bottom of the Hill it's The Meat Puppets, Trainwreck Riders, and The Shaky Hands (a troika of BAGeL Radio bands!), and I'll be there DJing, so buy your tickets now (no fee!) while they are still available.

As alluded to in the title of this post, your humble narrator is looking for work. Fast. If you have any leads on SF Bay Area job openings that you think I would rock, please do let me know. Internet radio, music librarian, event coordinator, software quality assurance, helping to ease willing septuagenarians into the computer age...you name it, I'll consider it. Thanks.

Also, if you know anyone who would benefit from learning how to start a blog, podcast, and internet radio station, and learn how to maximize the synergies between them, please let them know that my class, "Blogs, Podcasts, and Internet Radio" starts up again on 2/7 at San Francisco State University. Sign up!

As for today's show, I must admit I am very psyched about several of the things we will be debuting. "480 Minutes" will feature new music today from Morrissey (Los Angeles, CA), Animal Collective (Baltimore, MD), Lily Allen (London, England), The Wrens (Secaucus, New Jersey), Now Now Every Children (Minneapolis, MN), A.C. Newman (Vancouver, Canada), Andrew Bird (Chicago, IL), Gemma Hayes (Dublin, Ireland), Vulture Whale (Birmingham, AL), Kyle Andrews (Nashville, TN), Freshkills (New York, NY), Sparks (Los Angeles, CA), and several cover versions of pop hits by cool bands including My Brightest Diamond, Robbers On High Street, and Frightened Rabbit.

Please tune in this and every Friday to "480 Minutes," which runs live from 12 noon to 8 p.m. Eastern Time, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific. You can reach me with requests, comments, corrections, criticisms, praise, etc. via:

"480 Minutes" - Happy 2009!

Good morning and welcome to the 2009 inaugural edition of "480 Minutes." 2009 has been anything but boring in these first couple of weeks, and I'm excited to get back on the air to play you new stuff and perhaps chat a bit about why Sanjay "Dr. No" Gupta should not be our next Surgeon General.

While I still have your attention, it is my pleasure to announce the BAGeL Radio Half Dozenth Birthday Party. Yes, it's true, the "Little Station That Could" turns 6 years old on 2/1, and to celebrate we're having a party our favorite venue, The Bottom of the Hill, on Saturday 2/7 featuring:
Birdmonster
Railcars
Ricky Lee Robinson

As for today's show, it will feature new music today from Chris T-T (Brighton/London, England), Lonely, Dear (Jönköping, Sweden), Foreign Orange (Portland, OR), Golden Error (Brooklyn, NY), Willoughby (Los Angeles, CA), DJ Signify (Brooklyn, NY), Fires Of Rome (Brooklyn, NY), Padre Pio (Brooklyn, NY), Black Peter Group (New York), and Common (Chicago, IL).

Please tune in every Friday to "480 Minutes," which runs live from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time. You can reach me with requests, but comments, corrections, criticisms, praise, etc. via:

"480 Minutes"- the you called Obama a what?!? edition

Traditionally the show after the Best Of... show is a free-for-all filled with classics and great recent tracks requested by you, the listeners, and stitched together by me, the host. I don't see any reason why today should be any different. Have a peek at some of our recent year-end lists to get some ideas for requests.

Please tune in to the latest edition of the longest-running weekly hosted live show in the history of internet radio, "480 Minutes," today and every Friday. The show runs live from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time, is rebroadcast starting at 8 p.m., then twice more on Saturday. On Saturday night at midnight we return to regular BAGeL Radio programming.

"480 Minutes" - Best Music of 2008

Good morning and welcome to the The Best Music of 2008 edition of "480 Minutes."

There was some science involved in the rankings, including scouring playlists to determine how many times songs got played on the air throughout the year, and how many songs from albums got played, etc. The parts not covered by science, like the final touches and tweaks, were all made with an almost complete disregard for objectivity.

At 10 a.m. Pacific Time we will start with the #50 song of 2008, and the countdown to #1 will take us about 1:30 p.m. For the hour or so after that we'll squeeze in another 15 of the best songs of 2008, a sort of "honorary mention" hour, followed by 10 of the best SF Bay Area Songs of the Year (which didn't make the Top 50 overall) beginning at 3 p.m. Pacific Time. Because several of the local songs were so strong this year I decided to break with tradition and include those in the overall Best of 2008 list.

At 12 noon or thereabouts we will unveil the Top 25 Albums of 2008 -- if I forget to do it, please nudge me.

I recommend that you take notes so you can go buy some of these amazing records over the weekend. If you miss anything, there will be a blog post made over the weekend containing a complete run-down of the Top 50 Songs, Top 25 Albums, Top Bay Area Albums, Top Bay Area Songs, and even a list of the Top 10 Cover Versions released in 2008. Fill out your 2008 collection, and also consider buying music for friends and family. It is the holiday season, you know.

Please tune in every Friday to "480 Minutes," which runs live from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time. Due to the "Best of..." nature of this edition, requests are completely pointless today, but if you have comments, corrections, criticisms, please do get in touch via:

"480 Minutes" - OMG It's DEC

(note: the show/station is online -- yes, that means you can tune in from wherever you are!)

Can it really be December already? I mean, it's 12/08 folks. We are now less than 13 months from the second decade of the first century of the new millennium. It's madness, I tell you. Madness.

December brings with it year-end lists (and any source that submits such lists earlier cannot be trusted), and in this tradition, BAGeL Radio is thrilled to participate. What will be the top songs, albums, shows, and local music of 2008? Tune in next Friday, December 12th, to "480 Minutes" for those answers and more.

Usually we don't add new music to rotation after November, just so we can catch our breath and review and rank the thousands of songs that got airplay during the previous 11 months, but today is different. Today we will showcase new music from downdime (Leeds, England), The Dresden Dolls (Boston, MA. - a Johnny Cash cover), Grey Anne (Portland, OR), Ladyhawke (Wellington, New Zealand), Los Campesinos! (Cardiff, Wales), Matt Pond PA (New York, NY), The Soft Hands (Long Beach, CA), and Universe Narrows (Concord, MA).

BAGeL Radio Tuesdays With Cory

Happy (almost) Thanksgiving, everyone.

Please tune in today for Absolutely Kosher Cory's show at 10am Pacific Time, it promises to be a fun one, and it's the only new hosted program this week because of the holiday. Of course BAGeL Radio will be broadcasting 24/7 as always, there just won't be a live edition of "480 Minutes" this Friday due to "Black Friday" historically being a very slow day for listenership.

Hopefully this particular rerun will whet your whistle for the 12/19/08 edition of "480 Minutes" which will feature the BAGeL Radio picks for the top songs, albums, local songs, local albums, and shows of 2008. (Nudge, nudge, wink, wink -- that's a hint about the content of this Friday's rerun).

Don't forget to tune in today and every Tuesday at 10a.m. Pacific Time for BAGeL Radio Tuesdays with Cory, and if that time is inconvenient for you the program is rebroadcast on Tuesday evenings at 10p.m. Pacific Time.

"480 Minutes" featuring new Eagles Of Death Metal

For the second straight week the show will feature fewer new songs than usual, in part due to the fact that fewer packages than usual (by about half -- I wonder if my last "480 Minutes" post offended some folks?!) arrived this week. Maybe it's just the pre-turkey slow down. Speaking of which, next Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, and since pretty much no one in the US works in offices on that day (and those that do are consumed with coming up cruel and brutish ways to murder the person who forced them to be in the office), so next week there will be a re-run. For those that do tune in, you will be treated to a classic episode, perhaps the Best Music of 2007 show? We'll see.

New music today from Maus Haus (San Francisco, CA), Belle and Sebastian (Glasgow, Scotland), Eagles Of Death Metal (Palm Desert, CA), Hush Arbors (Virginia), Listing Ship (Los Angeles, CA), The Loom (Brooklyn, NY), Mount Eerie (Anacortes, WA), and Quitzow (Hudson Valley, NY).

Please tune in to "480 Minutes" today and every Friday. The show runs live from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time, is rebroadcast starting at 8 p.m., then twice more on Saturday. On Saturday night at midnight we return to regular BAGeL Radio programming.

"480 Minutes" - featuring new Decemberists

Today "480 Minutes" features quite a bit less new music than usual because certain radio promo companies are failing in their capacity as "filter." Instead of choosing good badns with good records these shady companies are simply promoting anything that people pay them to promote. While this might sound like good business, it is not -- every crap record they send out makes them less of a "trusted source," which hurts the good acts they promote. There was a time when I would get packages from promo company X and think, "Cool!" and look forward to listening to the contents. Now when I get packages from promo company X, they go to the bottom of my pile. For every strong release they send me, they send five things that are either inappropriate for an indie rock station or just plain crap, and for that reason those plummet on my list of priorities. Weeding through all of thatHot Topic faux-punk rock and boring, bland generic Coldplay/ Jack Johnson wastes hours and hours of music directors' time. It's almost criminal.

Over-booked promo companies -- you know who you are. Take a look in the mirror, give a listen to the stuff you are promoting, and remember you have a reputation to maintain. Or perhaps, by this point, a reputation to rehabilitate.

Bands & labels - check out the current roster (and overall amount of stuff) on the plates of the the radio promo companies you are considering using before you decide to throw your business their way.

New music today from The Decemberists (Portland, OR), A Block Of Yellow (London, Canada), Chop Chop (Cambridge, MA), Neil Gaiman (Minneapolis, MN), Red Wire Black Wire (Brooklyn, NY), Religious Knives (Brooklyn, NY), and The Rollo Treadway (Brooklyn, NY).

No 480 Minutes Today

The CMJ New Music Marathon folks asked me to be on a panel discussing the impact of digital music on radio stations, so there will be no 480 Minutes program today. The show will be back next week, in the meantime below are a few photos taken this week here in my hometown:

"480 Minutes" featuring new music. Seriously.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the BarackNRoll event, to Big Light, These United States, and the great John Doe for entertaining everyone who came out, the Independent for bending over backwards to help, and to the event organizers who made it all happen. Bravo on a huge success -- the event raised over $10,000 that will be used to help peel back the "he's a terrorist" blinders from the eyes of FOX News viewers in swing states.

Check out Peter Elenby's event photos at BarackNRoll.com.

Quick heads up -- next Friday "480 Minutes" will be a re-run while I am in New York at the CMJ New Music Marathon.

Please participate in our Radiohead favorite album poll.

New music today from 20 Minute Loop (San Francisco, CA), Baby Guts (Minneapolis, MN), The Major Labels (LA/Boston), James (Manchester, England England), Frances (Brooklyn, NY), Cause Co-Motion (Brooklyn, NY), Pelle Carlberg (Stockhold, Sweden), Solid Gold (Minneapolis, MN), Parts And Labor (Brooklyn, NY), Like A Fox (New Jersey/Philadelphia), Josh Martinez (Portland, OR), Francois Virot (Rhône-Alpes, France), and a San Francisco band that does not yet have a name, so I am calling them The Great Crash Oh Eight.

Why is John McCain protecting the richest of the rich using as a human shield a non-licensed plumber? Some 40% of Americans will buy whatever McLiar is selling simply because he claims to be anti-choice. Well, that, plus rejecting the Republican party now would mean admitting that their votes for Dim Son these past couple of elections are largely responsible for the quickest imperial collapse in the history of great world powers. StateOfTheDay.com has more, and Barry Crimmins has the complete analysis.

"480 Minutes" - Barack 'N Roll Next Week!

Happy Friday. Today I have a show to pimp and it's not even mine -- it's Mrs. BAGeL's. She is one of the organizers of Barack 'N Roll at the Independent this coming Wednesday, October 15th -- please buy a ticket. The event will feature BAGeL Radio favorites These United States (Lexington, KY), Big Light (San Francisco, CA), and an X-tra Special Guest who also just happens to be a BAGeL Radio all-time favorite. Even more importantly, the event is a benefit for ObamaTravel.org, and organization that matches up folks willing to travel to swing states with folks who have air miles, hotel points, and/or cash to contribute towards their canvassing efforts. It's a great way to get folks involved in the election while making sure that our next President was the President of the Harvard Law Review and chose a running-mate of deep knowledge, instead of the fellow who graduated 894th out of 899 at Annapolis and thinks Sarah "spectacularly ill-informed" Palin is the best choice to be one 72 year-old heart beat from the presidency. I have a feeling it's going to take a person who is good at math and economics to get us through the next eight years, don't you?

Anyway, please buy a ticket to the event, whether or not you can attend. All of the door money is going towards the cause, so think of it as a donation.

New music today will include songs by Margo And The Nuclear So And So's (Indiannapolis, IN), The Sea And Cake (Chicago, IL), Fucked Up (Toronto, Canada), Oasis (Manchester, England), Other Lives (Stillwater, OK), Crooked Fingers (Denver, CO), International Jetsetters (Oxford, England), Pit Er Pat (Chicago, IL), I'm From Barcelona (Jönköping, Sweden), Wax Fang (Lexington, KY), Boo And Boo Too (Lawrence, KS), PH10 (Brooklyn, NY), The Standard (Portland, OR), and Vivian Girls (Brooklyn, NY).

I have been unable to keep up with my photo-taking lately. This week I forced myself to sift through my recent pix so I could participate in a friendly theme photo project. Man, there were a lot of photos to go through! Nearly 800 that were tagged "music" in September. I selected 20 for upload, including some of Squeeze @ The Mountain Winery and some from the Treasure Island Music Festival. See samples from that group of photos below, and click on any to go to the set of 20. Hopefully this weekend I will find the time to edit and upload full sets of each band.

News: There's a reason Karl Rove has been keeping his candidates from talking with the press -- they are lousy at it! Even when simply sticking to the same canned answers they've been fed in their scripted speeches they look uncomfortable and unconvincing. Truly embarrassing performances by both yesterday.

Still, there are Americans out there who believe recycled, discredited rumors about "reparations" that have been floating against black politicians for decades. These closet racists are going to accept those lies as truth and use them as an excuse to vote for the old white guy who wants to continue the Bush policies that have decimated the country from coast to coast.

News: Sarah Palin, John McCain's choice to be a heartbeat away from the presidency, has international relations experience because (get this) she's from Alaska, which is the closest state to Russia. This according to FOX News. If her expertise on Russia is so great, why didn't she warn us about the recent invasion of Georgia? I wonder if one of Palin's aids presented her with a "Putin Determined To Strike Georgia" memo and she decided it was not as worthy of her attention as trying to get books banned. I mean, I know that whole Russia thing is The Secretary of State's job and supposed area of expertise, but Condoleeza Rice houses her shoe collection all the way over there in D.C., right? How could she have known?

During their RNC speeches Mike Huckabee and John McCain talked about change so much you'd think it had been other party in the White House destroying the country these last eight long years. Pious Mike finished up by relating the story of a high school teacher explaining to her class that their classroom desks were paid for by the sacrifices of war veterans. Gee, Mike, I hate to nitpick, but I'm pretty sure that those desks and books and school buildings and teacher salaries and roads and bridges are all paid for by those things that you demonize: taxes. The AP also did some fact-checking of the claims made in some RNC speeches and found that they "stretched the truth" and Minister Huckabee actually let loose with a "whopper" (which Merriam Webster defines as "an extravagant or monstrous lie"). I know, shocking, Right?

News: Former President Bill Clinton nailed it in his Democratic Convention speech: in 1992 the Republicans branded brash Bill too young and inexperienced for the job, and what followed his election were 8 years of peace and prosperity. Now the Republicans are saying that Barack Obama is too young and inexperienced for the job. I hope they are as accurate this time as they were 16 years ago. Vice Presidential Candidate Joe Biden's speech was pretty good, too, as were those of Al Gore and even John Kerry. The line of the week, however, went to Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer who quipped, "We simply can't drill our way to energy independence. If you drilled everywhere, if you drilled in all of John McCain's backyards, even the ones he doesn't know he has."

"480 Minutes" featuring new Walkmen, One For The Team

Just two weeks until the next BAGeL Radio Presents... event, a rockshowdancepartyhybrid featuring Scissors For Lefty, Head Like A Kite, and some DJ named Ted from BAGeL Radio. Mark your calendars: Saturday August 30th at The Rickshaw Stop. Tune into "480 Minutes" on Fridays from 9a.m to 5p.m. Pacific Time to win tickets, or just go buy a few from the venue website.

New music today will include songs by The Ettes (San Francisco, CA), Kristoffer Ragnstam (Gothenburg, Sweden), Obi Best (Los Angeles, CA), Konrad (Rock Island, IL), Lower Class Revolt (San Francisco, CA), One For The Team (Minneapolis, MN), Man/Miracle (Oakland, CA), and The Walkmen (New York, NY).

Today's show may be something of a classics show -- DJ iPod has been spinning me lots of 4- and 5-star songs from the 68k-song BAGeL Radio library this week, which makes me want to do an all-classics show. No can do, too much good new stuff to debut and too much strong recent stuff, but there will be a higher percentage of all-time alt-rock greats than usual.

Please tune in to "480 Minutes" today and every Friday. The show runs live from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time, is rebroadcast starting at 7 p.m., then twice more on Saturday. On Saturday night at midnight we return to regular BAGeL Radio programming.

"480 Minutes" - new Gentleman Auction House

Thanks to everyone who came out to see Darker My Love at The Independent on Tuesday and to The Rumble on Wednesday -- those back to back late nights were daunting but turned out ot be well worth the effort. I've got one more late night left this week (well, until the Birdmonster mp3 release listening party on Sunday at the Hotel Utah!) and that's tonight at The Owl Mag 3rd Anniversary at the Independent with Wallpaper, Hottub, & Vitamin Party, plus DJ sets by Aaron Axelsen of Live 105 and Amplive of Zion-I. Buy tickets for The Owl Mag event. We will have a couple of pairs of tickets to give away, so when you hear me talking about owls or magazines, get in touch!

A couple of years ago we played a record by a St. Louis band called Gentleman Auction House. I was in love with it, and even though it was just an EP, it ended up on our year-end best albums chart. Their debut full-length album Alphabet Graveyard just came out and our copy finally arrived this week, so we'll be debuting songs from it today. Other music debuting today includes songs from Sebastien Grainger (formerly half of Death From Above 1979 from Montreal, Canada), Powersolo (Aarhus, Denmark), The Faint (Omaha, NE), The LeeMaj7 (San Francisco, CA), Dan Le Sac Vs. Scroobius Pip (Stanford-le-Hope, England), Human Highway (Ontario, Canada), and Lee "Scratch" Perry (Jamaica).

News: That letter that Bill O'Reilly was all aflutter about in 2003? The one that exonerated the Bushists for their illegal invasion? It was a fake. A fake ordered up by The White House, fabricated by the CIA, and delivered by that Administration stooge Alawi. The Bush Administration has completely destroyed any moral authority the United States may have once had in the world. Heckuva job, Bushie.

Did you miss the election news this week? John McCain decided it was not flip-flopping to mock Obama about something and agree with him about that very same thing in the very same week to slide deeper into the Karl Rovian mud he has employed. "480 Minutes" featuring new Cold War Kids, Conor Oberst

If you bought music online from the MicroSoft Music Network, RealNetworks, Virgin, Sony Connect, Liquid Audio, or now the Yahoo! Music Store, read this and start burning to CD all the songs/albums you thought you bought when you clicked those misleading "buy" buttons. There is no telling how much longer those files will play on your computer. I know, I know, you clicked a "buy" button and were charged money, so you own the file, right? Wrong, sucker. The geniuses that control 90% of the music industry have screwed you again.

On a more positive note some really good new music arrived this week including stuff from a couple of BAGeL Radio faves, Cold War Kids (Long Beach, CA), and Conor Oberst (Omaha, NE) of Bright Eyes. That's not all, of course, today's show will also feature new music from Muy Cansado (Boston, MA), Colourmusic (Stillwater, OK), Evening Empire (San Francisco, CA), Little Teeth (San Francisco, CA), Pelle Carlberg (Stockholm, Sweden), Brazilian Girls (New York, NY), Takka Takka (Brooklyn, NY), Bowery Boy Blue (New York, NY), Dead Amps (Redlands, CA), Tom Alford (San Rafael, CA), and selections from the Labrador Records 2008 Summer Sampler (Stockholm, Sweden).

Get your tickets for the great series of events coming to the Bay Area in early August. On Tuesday August 5th BAGeL Radio Presents... Darker My Love, Lumerians, and The Eulogies @ The Independent. The $10 ticket price includes a copy of the new DML album, "2" -- take that, Radiohead! The next night (Wednesday 8/6) is the August Rumble, and then that Friday 8/8 our friends The Owl Mag are celebrating their 3rd Anniversary at the Independent with Wallpaper, Hottub, & Vitamin Party, plus DJ sets by Aaron Axelsen of Live 105 and Amplive of Zion-I. Buy tickets for The Owl Mag par-tay here.

Also, for the Iron & Wine fans reading this, hie thee over to SonicLiving.com and click the Iron & Wine link to get the password for presale tickets to their October 5th show/Cynthia Noonan benefit at Bimbo's.

Warning: Non music-related content --Did you see what happened this week here in the US? John McCain talked about the situation on the (non-existent) Iraq-Pakistan border completely screwed up the timeline of The Surge (about which he's an expert and long-time supporter, dontcha know), launched an attack ad blaming Barack Obama personally for high gas prices, launched an attack ad juxtaposing Obama with a dictator (for the second time! different dictator this time!), started a campaign suggesting that the mainstream media is in love with Obama the same week CBS kindly edited out his damningly erroneous Surge timeline assertions from an interview (seriously, McCain's aggregious error should have been the story but instead it removed from history), and was photographed being driven around a golf course by George H.W. Bush while looking like he could be the 84-year old former president's father.

"480 Minutes" - including a visit from Tuscon's Mostly Bears

Today's show will feature a visit from Mostly Bears (Tucson, AZ), whose album The Ed Mitchell Clinic hit #7 on the BAGeL Radio Airplay Chart this Spring, and whose Only Child EP cracked the BAGeL Radio playlists last summer.

Today's program will contain never-before-heard on BAGeL Radio music including new Feral Children (Maple Valley, WA) (this band is like Arcade Fire meets Animal Collective meets Arcade Fire meets Wolf Parade), The Lost Satellites (Petersburg, VA), Forward Russia (Leeds, UK), Boy Genius (Brooklyn, NY), The Curse Of Company (Sydney, Australia), Elephone (San Francisco, CA), Pop Levi (Los Angeles, CA), The Bug (London, England), mrandmrsmays (Austin, TX), and Passenger (Brighton, England).

Today listeners will win pairs of tickets for the fast-approaching Download Festival at the Shoreline Amphitheatre. The July 19th lineup (that's a week from tomorrow!) includes The Jesus & Mary Chain, Gang Of Four, Atmosphere & Brother Ali, Brand New, Mute Math, Yeasayer, Sia, M83, Mates of State, The Whigs, William Fitzsimmons, Cut Copy, Datarock, Flosstradamus, RJD2, Duke Spirit, Tapes n Tapes, Blitzen Trapper, Louis XIV, Airborne Toxic Event, and De Novo Dahl, amongst others. Tune in and when you hear a song by one of those bands, get in touch and you might just win yourself a pair of free tickets. Or stop leaving your life up to chance -- take charge and buy tickets here for just $20.

If you are looking to see live music in the Bay Area tonight, head on over to Thee Parkside to see today's "480 Minutes' guests, Mostly Bears perform on a bill with Nylon Heart Attack for only $6. Another good option is right down the street from Thee Parkside: friends of BAGeL Radio, The Bay Bridged, are putting on a show over at Bottom of the Hill featuring 20 Minute Loop (CD release party), Caves, and Man-Miracle (single release). Sadly we don't have copies of the 20ML album, nor the M-M single, to play for you today, hopefully next week we will.

No "480 Minutes" This Week...

...due to the National holiday. No, Bush and Cheney haven't been impeached and forced to resign, but it is Independence Day here in the US, they day we celebrate cutting ties with the Empire that spawned us so that, some 200 years later, we could become one of our very own.

That said, today's programming will not be hosted but it will contain brand new material from Beck (Los Angeles, CA), Globes On Remote (Los Angeles, CA), Daedelus (Los Angeles, CA), Darker My Love (Los Angeles, CA), Tilly and the Wall (Omaha, NE), Hypatia Lake (Seattle, WA), Tu Fawning (Portland, OR), The M's (Chicago, IL), MakeUpBreakUp (Providence, RI), Au Revoir Simone (covering David Bowie) (Brooklyn, NY), The Pleasure Kills (San Francisco, CA), Roche (San Francisco, CA), and Control R (San Francisco, CA).

"480 Minutes" - Nu-gazer Ascending

The onslaught continues -- this week's "2vet" playlist (that's what I name the weekly playlist of submissions each week) was 465 songs long. That's a totally absurd number of songs. Usually it's between 200 and 300, and during the summer months it's always been far less than that. Just what is going on? Will someone please tell me?

Several of today's new acts can be shoehorned into the category of Nu-gazer* (that's current Shoegazer), and it's nice to hear bands who can write songs reviving that early 90s genre (epitomized by My Bloody Valentine, Ride, and Lush).

"480 Minutes" The Return of the Marathon

OK, we're back. And there's so much good stuff to get to, I don't even know where to begin. That 500-song playlist I've been panning through ended up being more like 700 songs as I found other things to listen to, and there's still a backlog of CDs I need to get to, but there was some quality in there, let me tell you.

As such today's program will contain a host of never-before-heard on BAGeL Radio music including new Wolf Parade (Montreal, Canada), The Notwist (Munich, Germany), The Cute Lepers (Seattle, WA), Okay (Berkeley, CA), Ladytron (Liverpool, UK), Herman Dune (Sweden), The Charlatans (Manchester, UK), Centro-Matic (Denton, TX), The Chap (London, UK), Cineplexx (Barcelona, Spain), Crayonsmith (Dublin, Ireland), The Dimes (Portland, OR), The Dudley Corporation (Dublin, Ireland), Foxboro Hot Tubs (Oakland, CA), The Gang (Brooklyn, NY), The Harbours (San Francisco, CA), Jason Webley (Seattle, WA), Jeff Wagner's Tunnel Of Love (San Francisco, CA.), Little Beirut (Portland, OR), Mono In VCF (Tacoma, WA), My Morning Jacket (Louisville, KY), Ricky Lee Robinson (Oakland, CA), The Saturday Knights (Seattle, WA), Setting Sun (Hudson Valley, NY), Sigur Ros (Reykjavík, Iceland), Sloan (Toronto, Canada), Southeast Engine (Athens, OH), Sybris (Chicago, IL), Taylor Hollingsworth (Birmingham, AL), The Weeks (Jackson, MS), and 60 Watt Kid (San Francisco, CA).

Today listeners will have a chance to win a DVD copy of the acclaimed film about Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis, Control, and we continue our ticket giveaway for for The Download Festival at the Shoreline Ampitheatre. The July 19th lineup now includes The Jesus & Mary Chain and Gang Of Four to go along with Atmosphere & Brother Ali, Brand New, Mute Math, Yeasayer, Sia, M83, Mates of State, The Whigs, William Fitzsimmons, Cut Copy, Datarock, Flosstradamus, RJD2, Duke Spirit, Tapes n Tapes, Blitzen Trapper, Louis XIV, Airborne Toxic Event, and De Novo Dahl, amongst others. Welcome Back "480 Minutes" Friday 6/20

For the first time since "480 Minutes" settled into it's regular Friday time slot over three years ago, there have been back-to-back weeks without a new episode. Apologies to all of those who tuned in expecting to hear the newest of the new, all presented live and with the interactive bits like IMs, e-mails, and the StudioCam chat room these past two Fridays. I have missed it too and look forward to getting back on the mic.

This Friday, the first day of summer here in the U.S., will feature the return of "480 Minutes," live and in-person from 9a.m. (Pacific Time) until 5p.m.

I have a backlog of nearly 500 already-encoded songs to listen to, plus several dozen as-yet unopened packages to go through, so this show is bound to be chock full of never-before-heard on BAGeL Radio music including (but hardly limited to) new Wolf Parade, The Notwist, Earlimart, The Cute Lepers, Okay, Ladytron, Herman Dune, and The Charlatans.

Please tune in Friday and help me get back into the swing of things. Listeners will have a chance this week to win a copy of the acclaimed film about Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis, Control, as well as tickets for The Download Festival at the Shoreline Ampitheatre. The event is on July 19th and will feature bands including The Jesus & Mary Chain (newly added), Gang Of Four (newly added), Atmosphere & Brother Ali, Brand New, Mute Math, Yeasayer, Sia, M83, Mates of State, The Whigs, William Fitzsimmons, Cut Copy, Datarock, Flosstradamus, RJD2, Duke Spirit, Tapes n Tapes, Blitzen Trapper, Louis XIV, Airborne Toxic Event, and De Novo Dahl, amongst others. Buy tickets here for just $20.

Tune in next Friday for multiple chances to win tickets for The Download Festival at the Shoreline Ampitheatre. The event is on July 19th featuring bands including Atmosphere & Brother Ali, Brand New, Mute Math, Yeasayer, Sia, M83, Mates of State, The Whigs, William Fitzsimmons, Cut Copy, Datarock, Flosstradamus, RJD2, Duke Spirit, Tapes n Tapes, Blitzen Trapper, Louis XIV, Airborne Toxic Event, and De Novo Dahl, amongst others, for just $20. . "480 Minutes" - Best of 2008 So Far

It's a special show this week -- it's the Best of 2008 (so far) show, featuring a countdown of the best albums of 2008 to date beginning at 11 a.m. Pacific Time. The segment is scheduled to run until 1 p.m.

We will also have a late-afternoon visit from Conor Jonathan of one of our favorite Bay Area bands, [the] caseworker, whose music has gotten excellent listener feedback here on BAGeL Radio since before the release of their debut album in 2003. And I kinda like them, too. Tune in at 4 to hear about the band and the new record they are working on now.

This show will also be the first in a series during which we will have tickets to give away to the Download Festival at Shoreline on July 19th. The lineup includes Atmosphere & Brother Ali, Brand New, Mute Math, Yeasayer, Sia, M83, Mates of State, The Whigs, William Fitzsimmons, Cut Copy, Datarock, Flosstradamus, RJD2, Duke Spirit, Tapes n Tapes, Blitzen Trapper, Louis XIV, Airborne Toxic Event, and De Novo Dahl. Tune in to win tickets this week and for the next several weeks. Tickets go on sale tomorrow, Saturday 5/31/08 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time, for the value price of $20.
