News: There's a reason Karl Rove has been keeping his candidates from talking with the press -- they are lousy at it! Even when simply sticking to the same canned answers they've been fed in their scripted speeches they look uncomfortable and unconvincing. Truly embarrassing performances by both yesterday.

Still, there are Americans out there who believe recycled, discredited rumors about "reparations" that have been floating against black politicians for decades. These closet racists are going to accept those lies as truth and use them as an excuse to vote for the old white guy who wants to continue the Bush policies that have decimated the country from coast to coast.

News: Sarah Palin, John McCain's choice to be a heartbeat away from the presidency, has international relations experience because (get this) she's from Alaska, which is the closest state to Russia. This according to FOX News. If her expertise on Russia is so great, why didn't she warn us about the recent invasion of Georgia? I wonder if one of Palin's aids presented her with a "Putin Determined To Strike Georgia" memo and she decided it was not as worthy of her attention as trying to get books banned. I mean, I know that whole Russia thing is The Secretary of State's job and supposed area of expertise, but Condoleeza Rice houses her shoe collection all the way over there in D.C., right? How could she have known?

During their RNC speeches Mike Huckabee and John McCain talked about change so much you'd think it had been other party in the White House destroying the country these last eight long years. Pious Mike finished up by relating the story of a high school teacher explaining to her class that their classroom desks were paid for by the sacrifices of war veterans. Gee, Mike, I hate to nitpick, but I'm pretty sure that those desks and books and school buildings and teacher salaries and roads and bridges are all paid for by those things that you demonize: taxes. The AP also did some fact-checking of the claims made in some RNC speeches and found that they "stretched the truth" and Minister Huckabee actually let loose with a "whopper" (which Merriam Webster defines as "an extravagant or monstrous lie"). I know, shocking, Right?

Today's show will feature an afternoon visit from Birdmonster who may or may not play an in-studio acoustic mini-set, that has (still!) yet to be confirmed, but they are always fun to have on the show to chat with and help pick songs. I expect they will be on the air beginning around 12:30 pm Pacific Time.

New music today will include songs by The Verve (Manchester, England), TV On The Radio (New York, NY), Bound Stems (Chicago, IL), The Pack A.D. (British Columbia, Canada), The Rumble Strips (London, England), Javelins (Detroit, MI), The Upsidedown (Portland, OR), Tricky (Bristol, England), Bears (Cleveland, OH), Chad VanGaalen (Calgary, Canada), The Broken West (Lost Angeles, CA), and The Mommyheads (New York, NY).

Please tune in to "480 Minutes" today and every Friday. The show runs live from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time, is rebroadcast starting at 8 p.m., then twice more on Saturday. On Saturday night at midnight we return to regular BAGeL Radio programming.

News: Former President Bill Clinton nailed it in his Democratic Convention speech: in 1992 the Republicans branded brash Bill too young and inexperienced for the job, and what followed his election were 8 years of peace and prosperity. Now the Republicans are saying that Barack Obama is too young and inexperienced for the job. I hope they are as accurate this time as they were 16 years ago. Vice Presidential Candidate Joe Biden's speech was pretty good, too, as were those of Al Gore and even John Kerry. The line of the week, however, went to Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer who quipped, "We simply can't drill our way to energy independence. If you drilled everywhere, if you drilled in all of John McCain's backyards, even the ones he doesn't know he has."

"480 Minutes" featuring new Walkmen, One For The Team

Just two weeks until the next BAGeL Radio Presents... event, a rockshowdancepartyhybrid featuring Scissors For Lefty, Head Like A Kite, and some DJ named Ted from BAGeL Radio. Mark your calendars: Saturday August 30th at The Rickshaw Stop. Tune into "480 Minutes" on Fridays from 9a.m to 5p.m. Pacific Time to win tickets, or just go buy a few from the venue website.

New music today will include songs by The Ettes (San Francisco, CA), Kristoffer Ragnstam (Gothenburg, Sweden), Obi Best (Los Angeles, CA), Konrad (Rock Island, IL), Lower Class Revolt (San Francisco, CA), One For The Team (Minneapolis, MN), Man/Miracle (Oakland, CA), and The Walkmen (New York, NY).

Today's show may be something of a classics show -- DJ iPod has been spinning me lots of 4- and 5-star songs from the 68k-song BAGeL Radio library this week, which makes me want to do an all-classics show. No can do, too much good new stuff to debut and too much strong recent stuff, but there will be a higher percentage of all-time alt-rock greats than usual.

Please tune in to "480 Minutes" today and every Friday. The show runs live from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time, is rebroadcast starting at 7 p.m., then twice more on Saturday. On Saturday night at midnight we return to regular BAGeL Radio programming.

"480 Minutes" - new Gentleman Auction House

Thanks to everyone who came out to see Darker My Love at The Independent on Tuesday and to The Rumble on Wednesday -- those back to back late nights were daunting but turned out ot be well worth the effort. I've got one more late night left this week (well, until the Birdmonster mp3 release listening party on Sunday at the Hotel Utah!) and that's tonight at The Owl Mag 3rd Anniversary at the Independent with Wallpaper, Hottub, & Vitamin Party, plus DJ sets by Aaron Axelsen of Live 105 and Amplive of Zion-I. Buy tickets for The Owl Mag event. We will have a couple of pairs of tickets to give away, so when you hear me talking about owls or magazines, get in touch!

A couple of years ago we played a record by a St. Louis band called Gentleman Auction House. I was in love with it, and even though it was just an EP, it ended up on our year-end best albums chart. Their debut full-length album Alphabet Graveyard just came out and our copy finally arrived this week, so we'll be debuting songs from it today. Other music debuting today includes songs from Sebastien Grainger (formerly half of Death From Above 1979 from Montreal, Canada), Powersolo (Aarhus, Denmark), The Faint (Omaha, NE), The LeeMaj7 (San Francisco, CA), Dan Le Sac Vs. Scroobius Pip (Stanford-le-Hope, England), Human Highway (Ontario, Canada), and Lee "Scratch" Perry (Jamaica).

News: That letter that Bill O'Reilly was all aflutter about in 2003? The one that exonerated the Bushists for their illegal invasion? It was a fake. A fake ordered up by The White House, fabricated by the CIA, and delivered by that Administration stooge Alawi. The Bush Administration has completely destroyed any moral authority the United States may have once had in the world. Heckuva job, Bushie.

Did you miss the election news this week? "480 Minutes" featuring new Cold War Kids, Conor Oberst

If you bought music online from the MicroSoft Music Network, RealNetworks, Virgin, Sony Connect, Liquid Audio, or now the Yahoo! Music Store, read this and start burning to CD all the songs/albums you thought you bought when you clicked those misleading "buy" buttons. There is no telling how much longer those files will play on your computer. I know, I know, you clicked a "buy" button and were charged money, so you own the file, right? Wrong, sucker. The geniuses that control 90% of the music industry have screwed you again.

On a more positive note some really good new music arrived this week including stuff from a couple of BAGeL Radio faves, Cold War Kids (Long Beach, CA), and Conor Oberst (Omaha, NE) of Bright Eyes. That's not all, of course, today's show will also feature new music from Muy Cansado (Boston, MA), Colourmusic (Stillwater, OK), Evening Empire (San Francisco, CA), Little Teeth (San Francisco, CA), Pelle Carlberg (Stockholm, Sweden), Brazilian Girls (New York, NY), Takka Takka (Brooklyn, NY), Bowery Boy Blue (New York, NY), Dead Amps (Redlands, CA), Tom Alford (San Rafael, CA), and selections from the Labrador Records 2008 Summer Sampler (Stockholm, Sweden).

Get your tickets for the great series of events coming to the Bay Area in early August. On Tuesday August 5th BAGeL Radio Presents... Darker My Love, Lumerians, and The Eulogies @ The Independent. The $10 ticket price includes a copy of the new DML album, "2" -- take that, Radiohead! The next night (Wednesday 8/6) is the August Rumble, and then that Friday 8/8 our friends The Owl Mag are celebrating their 3rd Anniversary at the Independent with Wallpaper, Hottub, & Vitamin Party, plus DJ sets by Aaron Axelsen of Live 105 and Amplive of Zion-I. Warning: Non music-related content --Did you see what happened this week here in the US? John McCain talked about the situation on the (non-existent) Iraq-Pakistan border completely screwed up the timeline of The Surge (about which he's an expert and long-time supporter, dontcha know), launched an attack ad blaming Barack Obama personally for high gas prices, launched an attack ad juxtaposing Obama with a dictator (for the second time! different dictator this time!), started a campaign suggesting that the mainstream media is in love with Obama the same week CBS kindly edited out his damningly erroneous Surge timeline assertions from an interview (seriously, McCain's aggregious error should have been the story but instead it removed from history), and was photographed being driven around a golf course by George H.W. Bush while looking like he could be the 84-year old former president's father.

"480 Minutes" - including a visit from Tuscon's Mostly Bears

Today's show will feature a visit from Mostly Bears (Tucson, AZ), whose album The Ed Mitchell Clinic hit #7 on the BAGeL Radio Airplay Chart this Spring, and whose Only Child EP cracked the BAGeL Radio playlists last summer.

Today's program will contain never-before-heard on BAGeL Radio music including new Feral Children (Maple Valley, WA) (this band is like Arcade Fire meets Animal Collective meets Arcade Fire meets Wolf Parade), The Lost Satellites (Petersburg, VA), Forward Russia (Leeds, UK), Boy Genius (Brooklyn, NY), The Curse Of Company (Sydney, Australia), Elephone (San Francisco, CA), Pop Levi (Los Angeles, CA), The Bug (London, England), mrandmrsmays (Austin, TX), and Passenger (Brighton, England).

Today listeners will win pairs of tickets for the fast-approaching Download Festival at the Shoreline Amphitheatre. The July 19th lineup (that's a week from tomorrow!) includes The Jesus & Mary Chain, Gang Of Four, Atmosphere & Brother Ali, Brand New, Mute Math, Yeasayer, Sia, M83, Mates of State, The Whigs, William Fitzsimmons, Cut Copy, Datarock, Flosstradamus, RJD2, Duke Spirit, Tapes n Tapes, Blitzen Trapper, Louis XIV, Airborne Toxic Event, and De Novo Dahl, amongst others. Tune in and when you hear a song by one of those bands, get in touch and you might just win yourself a pair of free tickets. Or stop leaving your life up to chance -- take charge and buy tickets here for just $20.

If you are looking to see live music in the Bay Area tonight, head on over to Thee Parkside to see today's "480 Minutes' guests, Mostly Bears perform on a bill with Nylon Heart Attack for only $6. Another good option is right down the street from Thee Parkside: friends of BAGeL Radio, The Bay Bridged, are putting on a show over at Bottom of the Hill featuring 20 Minute Loop (CD release party), Caves, and Man-Miracle (single release). Sadly we don't have copies of the 20ML album, nor the M-M single, to play for you today, hopefully next week we will.

Please tune in to "480 Minutes" today and every Friday. The show runs live from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time, then is rebroadcast starting at 7 p.m., then twice more on Saturday. On Saturday night at midnight we return to regular BAGeL Radio programming.

"480 Minutes" - Nu-gazer Ascending

The onslaught continues -- this week's "2vet" playlist (that's what I name the weekly playlist of submissions each week) was 465 songs long. That's a totally absurd number of songs. Usually it's between 200 and 300, and during the summer months it's always been far less than that. Just what is going on? Will someone please tell me?

Several of today's new acts can be shoehorned into the category of Nu-gazer* (that's current Shoegazer), and it's nice to hear bands who can write songs reviving that early 90s genre (epitomized by My Bloody Valentine, Ride, and Lush).

Today's program will contain never-before-heard on BAGeL Radio music including new *Joshua Lanes (Long Beach, CA), Earlimart (Los Angeles, CA), Calico Horse (San Diego, CA), Birdmonster (San Francisco, CA), *Boy In Static (San Francisco, CA), The May Fire (San Francisco, CA), Head Like A Kite (Seattle, WA), The Duchess And The Duke (Seattle, WA), Be Your Own Pet (Nashville, TN), The Delicious (Bloomington, IN), Hercules And Love Affair (Brooklyn, NY), The Hold Steady (Brooklyn, NY) (it's like Bob Mould meets Bruce Springsteen), Services (Brooklyn, NY), The Song Corporation (Brooklyn, NY), *Dead Heart Bloom (New York, NY), mrandmrsmays (Austin, TX), Shearwater (Austin, TX), YellowFever (Austin, TX), The Awkward Stage (Vancouver, Canada), Brendan Canning (Toronto, Canada), SJ Esau (UK), The Twilight Sad (Kilsyth, Scotland), and 4 Bonjour's Parties (Tokyo, Japan).

Today listeners will have a chance to win one last DVD copy of the acclaimed film about Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis, Control, and we continue our ticket giveaway for for The Download Festival at the Shoreline Ampitheatre. The July 19th lineup includes The Jesus & Mary Chain, Gang Of Four, Atmosphere & Brother Ali, Brand New, Mute Math, Yeasayer, Sia, M83, Mates of State, The Whigs, William Fitzsimmons, Cut Copy, Datarock, Flosstradamus, RJD2, Duke Spirit, Tapes n Tapes, Blitzen Trapper, Louis XIV, Airborne Toxic Event, and De Novo Dahl, amongst others, so tune in and when you hear a song by one of those bands, get in touch and you might just win yourself a pair of free tickets. Buy tickets here for just $20.

"480 Minutes" The Return of the Marathon

OK, we're back. And there's so much good stuff to get to, I don't even know where to begin. That 500-song playlist I've been panning through ended up being more like 700 songs as I found other things to listen to, and there's still a backlog of CDs I need to get to, but there was some quality in there, let me tell you.

As such today's program will contain a host of never-before-heard on BAGeL Radio music including new Wolf Parade (Montreal, Canada), The Notwist (Munich, Germany), The Cute Lepers (Seattle, WA), Okay (Berkeley, CA), Ladytron (Liverpool, UK), Herman Dune (Sweden), The Charlatans (Manchester, UK), Centro-Matic (Denton, TX), The Chap (London, UK), Cineplexx (Barcelona, Spain), Crayonsmith (Dublin, Ireland), The Dimes (Portland, OR), The Dudley Corporation (Dublin, Ireland), Foxboro Hot Tubs (Oakland, CA), The Gang (Brooklyn, NY), The Harbours (San Francisco, CA), Jason Webley (Seattle, WA), Jeff Wagner's Tunnel Of Love (San Francisco, CA.), Little Beirut (Portland, OR), Mono In VCF (Tacoma, WA), My Morning Jacket (Louisville, KY), Ricky Lee Robinson (Oakland, CA), The Saturday Knights (Seattle, WA), Setting Sun (Hudson Valley, NY), Sigur Ros (Reykjavík, Iceland), Sloan (Toronto, Canada), Southeast Engine (Athens, OH), Sybris (Chicago, IL), Taylor Hollingsworth (Birmingham, AL), The Weeks (Jackson, MS), and 60 Watt Kid (San Francisco, CA).

Today listeners will have a chance to win a DVD copy of the acclaimed film about Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis, Control, and we continue our ticket giveaway for for The Download Festival at the Shoreline Ampitheatre. The July 19th lineup now includes The Jesus & Mary Chain and Gang Of Four to go along with Atmosphere & Brother Ali, Brand New, Mute Math, Yeasayer, Sia, M83, Mates of State, The Whigs, William Fitzsimmons, Cut Copy, Datarock, Flosstradamus, RJD2, Duke Spirit, Tapes n Tapes, Blitzen Trapper, Louis XIV, Airborne Toxic Event, and De Novo Dahl, amongst others. Welcome Back "480 Minutes" Friday 6/20

For the first time since "480 Minutes" settled into it's regular Friday time slot over three years ago, there have been back-to-back weeks without a new episode. Apologies to all of those who tuned in expecting to hear the newest of the new, all presented live and with the interactive bits like IMs, e-mails, and the StudioCam chat room these past two Fridays. I have missed it too and look forward to getting back on the mic.

This Friday, the first day of summer here in the U.S., will feature the return of "480 Minutes," live and in-person from 9a.m. (Pacific Time) until 5p.m.

I have a backlog of nearly 500 already-encoded songs to listen to, plus several dozen as-yet unopened packages to go through, so this show is bound to be chock full of never-before-heard on BAGeL Radio music including (but hardly limited to) new Wolf Parade, The Notwist, Earlimart, The Cute Lepers, Okay, Ladytron, Herman Dune, and The Charlatans.

Please tune in Friday and help me get back into the swing of things. Listeners will have a chance this week to win a copy of the acclaimed film about Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis, Control, as well as tickets for The Download Festival at the Shoreline Ampitheatre. The event is on July 19th and will feature bands including The Jesus & Mary Chain (newly added), Gang Of Four (newly added), Atmosphere & Brother Ali, Brand New, Mute Math, Yeasayer, Sia, M83, Mates of State, The Whigs, William Fitzsimmons, Cut Copy, Datarock, Flosstradamus, RJD2, Duke Spirit, Tapes n Tapes, Blitzen Trapper, Louis XIV, Airborne Toxic Event, and De Novo Dahl, amongst others. Buy tickets here for just $20.

Happy Friday, folks.

I will be in transit today, so today's episode of "480 Minutes" will be a re-broadcast of a previously recorded show for the first time this whole year. The one we're going with happens to be a fan favorite, the 2007 Best Music of The Year episode, so please tune in and compare your 2007 year-end lists with mine.

No IMs or webcam today, but feel free to send in any comments or questions via e-mail and I will get back to you.

Tune in next Friday for multiple chances to win tickets for The Download Festival at the Shoreline Ampitheatre. The event is on July 19th featuring bands including Atmosphere & Brother Ali, Brand New, Mute Math, Yeasayer, Sia, M83, Mates of State, The Whigs, William Fitzsimmons, Cut Copy, Datarock, Flosstradamus, RJD2, Duke Spirit, Tapes n Tapes, Blitzen Trapper, Louis XIV, Airborne Toxic Event, and De Novo Dahl, amongst others, for just $20. . "480 Minutes" - Best of 2008 So Far

It's a special show this week -- it's the Best of 2008 (so far) show, featuring a countdown of the best albums of 2008 to date beginning at 11 a.m. Pacific Time. The segment is scheduled to run until 1 p.m.

We will also have a late-afternoon visit from Conor Jonathan of one of our favorite Bay Area bands, [the] caseworker, whose music has gotten excellent listener feedback here on BAGeL Radio since before the release of their debut album in 2003. And I kinda like them, too. Tune in at 4 to hear about the band and the new record they are working on now.

This show will also be the first in a series during which we will have tickets to give away to the Download Festival at Shoreline on July 19th. The lineup includes Atmosphere & Brother Ali, Brand New, Mute Math, Yeasayer, Sia, M83, Mates of State, The Whigs, William Fitzsimmons, Cut Copy, Datarock, Flosstradamus, RJD2, Duke Spirit, Tapes n Tapes, Blitzen Trapper, Louis XIV, Airborne Toxic Event, and De Novo Dahl. Tune in to win tickets this week and for the next several weeks. Tickets go on sale tomorrow, Saturday 5/31/08 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time, for the value price of $20.

http://live.yahoo.com/bagelradio

Besides the "Best of..." stuff today's show will feature songs never before heard on BAGeL Radio including music by Supergrass (Oxford, UK), Anthem In (Brooklyn, NY), Awesome Color (MI), Free Kitten (New York, NY), Loto Ball Show (Chicago, IL), Duffy (Wales, UK), Love As Laughter (Brooklyn, NY), Remote Control Frequencies (Chicago, IL), and West Indian Girl (Los Angeles, CA).

"480 Minutes" - live and waiting for requests

What an awesome Rumble this week (see some photos below and some more here)! Thanks to everyone for coming out, and to The Hundred Days for their mini-set, and of course to guest DJ Omar from Popscene/Leisure, who, as usual, ruled the decks.

Couple of ticket giveaways today -- the first is for tonight's show at 12 Galaxies featuring Oranger, the second will be for the next BAGeL Radio Presents... event featuring Handsome Furs.

"480 Minutes" - Live From Macworld!

(Note: the start of today's show has been delayed by Stupid Human Error. I hope to be able to switch to the remote broadcast by 9:45 a.m. Pacific Time)

Yesterday at Macworld I got to speak with Steven Haines, the Executive Director of the Stern Grove Festival, you can check out the interview here.

Today is the last day of Macworld, and BAGeL Radio will be broadcasting the weekly "480 Minutes" program live from the event. Stop by the SFSU College of Extended Learning booth (Moscone West, 4347) if you are going to be at the Expo, you might just get yourself a BAGeL Radio pin (while supplies last!) . Today we will be chatting live with two SFSU Digital Media educators, Craig Abaya (Director of the Digital Video Intensive program) and John Bendich (of the Music/Recording Industry program).

As with any remote broadcast, there is a chance that the stream will be interrupted briefly at the start and end of the show. Apologies in advance if that happens to you -- I hope you will forgive me and relaunch the station.

Two weeks from today is the BAGeL Radio 5th Birthday Party at Bottom of the Hill. That's Friday, February 1st, 2008 -- mark your calendar, it will be a fun night featuring great music from Peloton (SF), Lemon Sun (LA), and Audio Out Send (Oakland). You can and should buy advance tickets right here, right now. We will have some tickets to give away for that show during today's broadcast, so any time you hear a song by the bands that are playing, get in touch and you just might be a lucky winner. And by the way, it's an all-ages show, so feel free to bring the kids, little siblings, nieces and nephews, etc.

Please tune in to "480 Minutes" today and every Friday. The show is live from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time.

Today's show will feature new music from Love Is Chemicals (SF, CA) (album of the year so far), Chris Walla (of Death Cab For Cutie), British Sea Power (Brighton, England), Cat Power (Miami, FL), Bob Mould (Washington, DC), Clock Hands Strangle (Calvary Bay, FL), The Helio Sequence (Portland, OR), Jack Peñate (London, England), Lightspeed Champion (UK), Rafter (Sebastopol, CA), Rivers Cuomo (home recordings from Weezer front man), Scary Mansion (Brooklyn, NY), Times New Viking (Columbus, OH), The Whigs (Athens, GA), The White Stripes (a new B-side), and I would be playing something from Faunts (Edmonton, Canada), if only the term "radio edit" had been considered and acted upon before this was sent out. The best song on the record is over 8 minutes long. Come on, guys. Get real. That's not gonna get airplay.

"480 Minutes" - 12/7/07 - new Bush Tetras, Sabrosa Purr, The World Record

Music Director Ted Leibowitz hosts his program, "480 Minutes," on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time -- tune in today, give a listen, and drop him a line.

Please vote for Ted in the SF Bay Guardian Reader's Poll as Best Internet/Satellite DJ (BAGeL Radio) and Best Bar/Lounge DJ (Harlot) -- voting ends at noon Pacific Time today (that's 3pm Eastern, 20:00 GMT). Thanks. After that, please go to the PLUG Awards to vote for BAGeL Radio as Best Online Radio Station. Our first PLUG nomination is an honor, please help us make a good showing by voting for BAGeL Radio.

OK, now that that shameless groveling is out of the way, I would like to ask that the Bay Area listeners/readers buy tickets for next Thursday's BAGeL Radio Presents... event. It's a dual CD release show for Ex-Boyfriends and Audio Out Send, and 20 Minute Loop will open the show. IT's at Bottom of the Hill and it is an extremely early show. Doors are at 7:30, first band is on at 8, so get there super early and get home in time for The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.

Thanks to everyone who came out for Round 3 of The RUMBLE, the indie rock dance party at Harlot. (Check some photos from Round 2 here). I had a great time working with DJ Omar, and the event was quite the "Who's Who" of SF Music thanks to the early Rhapsody party. Cool stuff. The next one will likely be on 1/8/08 -- we usually do them on the first Wednesday of the month, but next month that's the day after New Year's Day, and we're sure that we won't be up for the task of partying again quite that soon after New Year's Eve.

Today's show will feature new stuff from Bush Tetras (NY, NY), Sabrosa Purr (LA, CA), and The World Record (LA, CA), plus a couple of things that slipped through the cracks when they were received during the hectic days of early June: Black Strobe (Paris, France), and The Long Blondes (Sheffield, UK).

Please tune in to today's edition of "480 Minutes" which runs live from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time every Friday. Today you can request songs via:

"480 Minutes" -11/16/07 - live show at Bottom tonight!

First of all, to those who tried to tune in and couldn't or were dropped while listening recently -- all apologies. ISP issues, local network issues, server issues -- you name it, it hit us this week, and it sucked at this end, too. That's why the site and blog have remained static all week as well. Hopefully we'll get much if not all of that squared away this weekend.

Today's program will feature ticket giveaways for tonight's (11/16) BAGeL Radio Presents... event featuring The Warlocks, Darker My Love, and The Otherside @ Bottom of the Hill. Get in touch via instant messenger, e-mail, or carrier pidgeon when you hear songs by any of those bands on the station and you could win yourself a pair of tickets to the show.

Even if you don't win, buy tickets here and come down to Bottom of the Hill for the show.

Why?

Several reasons. For one, you need to experience the opiatedelic gloomgaze psych rock drone of LA's The Warlocks first-hand, in person. I was asked about the term opiatedelic, which I cointed myself while listening to the new Warlocks album -- let's just say the music can induce something akin to opiate-induced psychedelic states. Less technicolor flora, more dark shadows; less giddy joy, more shuddering orgasm. They are proceeded by the psych rock sonic assault of Darker My Love (think Ride meets The Byrds) a band that totally blew me away at CMJ in 2006. Two of them have the added distinction of having performed as The Fall, backing the ledgendary Mark E. Smith on the last tour (after the English musicians that had been The Fall got fed up with Mark E. Smith and fled back to England mid-tour) as well as on the most recent Fall album. Opening the show is BAGeL Radio local favorites The Otherside (think Interpol meets The Stone Roses mixed with some Catherine Wheel), who are in the process of recording their second album and based on the early results I have heard, this will be the one that leaks them to a far wider audience beyond the Bay Area. The live sets will be framed by DJ sets by yours truly peppered with psych rock new (Serena Maneesh, Black Angels, Icarus Line) and old (Beatles '65-'67, Echo & The Bunnymen, My Bloody Valentine). Finally, it's Bottom of the Hill, our favorite Bay Area live music venue.

That's why.

Today's show will feature new stuff from 60 Watt Kid (San Francisco, CA), A.K.A.C.O.D. (Cambridge, MA, think female-fronted Morphine), Biirdie (Glendale, CA), Birds of Avalon (Raleigh, NC), Cars & Trains (Portland, OR), Ego Plum and The Ebola Music Orchestra (Los Angeles, CA), Ex-Boyfriends (San Francisco, CA), Dave Gahan (UK), The Go Station (New York, NY), The Glad Version (Minneapolis, MN), The Houstons (Charlotte, NC), The Kindness Kind (Seattle, WA), Lucinda Black Bear (Brooklyn, NY), The Mary Onettes (Jönköping, Sweden), Monster Bobby (UK), Moros Eros (Acworth, Georgia), The Most Serene Republic (Milton, Canada), Muscles (Melbourne, Australia), Orba Squara (New York, NY), The Owls (Minneapolis, MN), Parker Street Cinema (San Francisco, CA), Ravens & Chimes (New York, NY), Shipwreck (Champaign, IL), Saturday Looks Good To Me (Ann Arbor, MI), Soft (Brooklyn, NY), Soulsavers (UK), Anna Ternheim (Sweden), and Why? (Oakland, CA).

Please tune in to today's edition of "480 Minutes" which runs live from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time every Friday. Except the last two. Today you can once again request songs via:

"480 Minutes" -11/9/07 - new Sigur Ros, Hives, Tullycraft

Today's program will feature ticket giveaways for Great Northern/Robbers on High Street/ Low Sea Roar @ Bottom of the Hill on 11/9 (that's tonight, and it's "all ages") and The Warlocks/ Darker My Love/ The Otherside @ Bottom of the Hill on 11/16. Get in touch when you hear songs by any of those bands on the station and you just might win yourself a pair of tickets to their show.

Today there will be guests on the program -- the Seattle band Smile Brigade will be stopping by to tell tour tales and play us acoustic versions of a couple of their songs. They've had 3 songs in rotation here over the last couple of years, so it will be a real treat to have them here. They should be on the air at about 3pm Pacific Time, make sure to tune in and then check them out tonight at Kimo's.

Thanks to everyone who came out and danced at The Rumble @ Harlot this week, that was a lot of fun, and I'm feeling a little more comfortable doing the dance-DJ thing. A little. Special thanks to IndiePopRocks Elise, Rosemary Pepper, and Jimmy Little, my co-DJs for the evening. The Rumble Round 3 will be on Wednesday, December 5th, which is also the first night of Channukah, so gifts are encouraged.

Today's show will feature new stuff from Sigur Rós (Iceland), Wussy (Cincinnati, OH), Liars (Loas Angeles, CA), The Rumble Strips (UK), The Hives (Sweden), T.H. White (New York), Derek Webb (Nashville, TN), The Selfish Gene (Madison, WI), Tullycraft (Seattle, WA.), A Place To Bury Strangers (New York), Ms. Manners (Knoxville, TN), Pine Hill Haints (AL), Frank Turner (UK), and Bob Dylan covers from the soundtrack of the new Todd Haynes film I'm Not There including Sonic Youth, Karen O. (of Yeah Yeah Yeahs), and Stephen Malkmus (Portland, OR).

Today's show will also feature a bunch of early Elvis Costello material. Misty & I were two of the fortunate few who go to see him, along with the original musicians who played on his debut album, My Aim Is True, perform the whole album in order last night at the Great American Music Hall. The event was a benefit for a non-profit organization, The Richard de Lone Special Housing Project, (www.RDSHP.org), whose goal is to build a state-of-the-art residential care facility for Prader-Willi children and adults in the greater Bay Area. Prader-Willi Syndrome is a rare chromosomal disorder that is the leading genetic cause of morbid obesity. Due to the extreme difficulties that people with Prader-Willi face as they grow older, it is inevitable that Richie will end up in a residential care facility. Austin and his wife Lesley have vowed to do what they can to make Richard’s (and others with PWS) life better.

The show itself was spectacular. EC sounded great and told stories and was his usual, charming self. The Marin band Clover backed him, and they sounded perfect, too. Of course, since most of them (only the drummer was missing from the original lineup, and he was replaced by Attractions and Imposters drummer Pete Thomas) played on the album, it makes sense that it sounded perfect. Together they performed My Aim is True in it's entirety, in order. For an encore they did "Watching The Detectives," which did not appear on the the initial UK release of the album. Costello followed the album set with a solo acoustic set of material written no later than 1977, mainly songs that didn't make it onto My Aim is True, then was rejoined by Clover for more early Costello compositions plus a Clover song or two, and the show ended with Nick Lowe's "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love And Understanding," which most people now assume to be an EC song (kinda like Jimi Hendrix with "All Along The Watchtower," and Blondie with "Hanging on the Telephone," since they recorded the definitive, popular versions).

Please tune in to today's edition of "480 Minutes" which runs live from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time every Friday. Except the last two. Today you can once again request songs via:

"480 Minutes" 9/28/07 - free tix, Morrissey pix

First things first...you have got to go check out the photos I took of Morrissey at the Fillmore on Wednesday. Although his solo material will always be overshadowed by his work with The Smiths, the man remains a great performer, his fans adore him, and the songs are still quality.

OK, now that the hero worship stuff is out of the way, tune in today for a chance to win tickets to:

#**Division Day @ Bottom of the Hill 10/4
#Download Fest (feat. The Cure, Kings of Leon, BRMC, Metric, etc.) @ Shoreline 10/6

Also, please make note: I will be DJing at a monthly indie night at a new club here in San Francisco called Harlot. The night is called The Rumble, and the inaugural event is next Wednesday, October 3rd. Guest DJs for the grand opening will be Brian of Scissors For Lefty, and Dan of Every Move A Picture. This night is a group effort including TankFarm, The Owl Mag, My Open Bar, and Going.com. If you RSVP here it's free, so RSVP now.

Today's show may or may not include new music. I am working through a migraine headache and am trying to get through encoding all the new stuff. There is no telling when I'm going to reach that point where I need to go hide under the covers.

If there is new music it will include Audio Out Send (SF Oakland, CA), Bella (Vancouver, Canada), BEVEL (Chicago, IL), Boy/Girl (NY/LA), Brighton, MA (Chicago, IL), Kevin Drew (Toronto, Canada), Buck Brothers (London, England), Hard-Fi (Staines, England), Iron & Wine (Austin, TX), Jose Gonzalez (Goteborg, Sweden), Los Campesinos! (Cardiff, England), Magik Markers (Brooklyn, NY), Mannequin Men (Chicago, IL), Mobius Band (Brooklyn, NY), Moving Units (Los Angeles, CA), The Pipettes (Brighton, England), PJ Harvey (England), and Smile Brigade (Seattle, WA).

Please tune in to today's edition of "480 Minutes" which runs live from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time every Friday. As always you can request songs via:
