Listening to indie genius DJ Ted spin live at shows around town or online at his CMJ award–winning site BAGeL Radio sounds just like listening to your iPod on shuffle—if your iPod had magically been filled up with stuff you always wish you owned or didn’t know about yet but will later want to own. Oh, and if the shuffle feature had been refined so that it also miraculously skipped over anything embarrassing or anything you regret buying that’s lurking in your music library.

BAGeL Radio is in the news again, this time in the SF Weekly cover story about the dire situation facing the webcasting industry. Earlier in the week I also participated in a round table discussion of the issues facing webcasters. The show was hosted by KCRW General Manager Ruth Seymour, and I was there along with representatives from Pandora, Live365, and Yahoo! Music, WAMU, and AccuRadio. This Sunday BAGeL Radio, along with SomaFM, SonicLiving, Pandora, reapandsow, and Bottom of the Hill are hosting an event to raise money for and awareness of SaveNetRadio.org. The early (6pm-10pm) party will feature live performances by Ted of The Heavenly States, Matt of The Herms, HIJK, Miyako of Peloton, and a special guest, plus a bake sale, chili cook-off, raffles and silent auction featuring amazing prizes generously provided by Absolutely Kosher Records, Birdman Recording Group, Chronicle Books, Eenie Meenie Records, Griffin Technology, Jackpine Social Club, Kiptronic, LaLa Visuals, Live 365, one inch round, Peter Ellenby, Turn Records, What Are Records?, and WilloToons.

Hey. Guess what? I was on TV in a story about the internet radio day of silence. Here is a snippet from the story:

Next Tuesday, Internet radio is going to turn the music off and observe a day of silence.

Ted Leibowitz is one of tens of thousands of Internet DJ's protesting a 300-percent increase in royalty fees. Like most Internet radio programmers, Leibowitz does this for the love of music -- in his case, independent rock bands that don't get played on mainstream stations.

Ted Leibowitz, BagelRadio.com: "You're going to go from having this multitude of choices to having almost none."

Leibowitz fears that small operators like him can't afford the recent royalty fee hike. He estimates it will cost him tens of thousands of dollars. And his radio station, called Bagel Radio, is not a money maker.

However, the steep hike could force him to hang up his headphones.

Ted Leibowitz: "If my station goes away and all the other stations that play these small subsections of music, all that's going to be left is FM, and clearly there is a market for more than what is on FM."

BAGeL Radio will stream no music on Tuesday, June 26th. In solidarity with thousands of our webcasting brethren we are joining the Day of Silence in hopes of getting the attention of the mainstrem media. This event will illustrate to the 70+ million regular internet radio listeners in the US what will happen if the Copyright Royalty Board ruling is allowed to stand, shuttering independent internet radio for good. We hope that this spurs listeners and others to contact their representatives in Congress and ask that they support webcasters in this latest battle with the greedy, lying bastards at SoundExchange...who represent the RIAA...who represent the Major Labels...who are the swell folks who have been fleecing music lovers by charging obscene CD prices while at the same time fleecing their artists out of their cut of the profits.

Los Angeles-based NPR station KCRW is hosting a round table discussion of the issues:

KCRW JOINS FELLOW WEBCASTERS IN A "DAY OF SILENCE"

On Tuesday, June 26th, KCRW joins fellow webcasters in a Day of Silence. KCRW will shut down its regular web streams and broadcast a one-hour special program about the dangers to online streaming due to new high music royalties.

"D Day for Webcasters" will stream all-day Tuesday on KCRW.com -- repeating every hour for 24 hours -- and on KCRW's airwaves at 2 pm
