Texas-related Rerun

Good morning!

Good news: BAGeL Radio is going to Austin, TX, for the South By Southwest (aka SXSW) Music Festival!

Not such good news: as a result of our travels, this week's edition of 480 Minutes will be a rerun.

Better news (but still not as good as the news about going to SXSW): the rerun is an episode you likely never heard, and certainly never heard in it's entirety. Throughout the day that this episode aired live, we had network difficulties, so except for the most obsessive 480 Minutes listeners, most are unlikely to have caught this one. The playlist included so much great new music that the show ended up quite good despite the dejected (due to technical difficulties) mood of the host.

If you find yourself wandering around Austin aimlessly on Thursday during the day, please stop by The Beauty Bar. I will be DJing the 3rd Annual Bay Area Takeover from 11:30 a.m. - 6 p.m., so stop by and say hi. I'll be the guy with the headphones who is not the sound engineer. The event features some terrific Bay Area bands including Man/Miracle and Geographer.

Also, we will be updating our Twitter feed (http://twitter.com/bagelradio) regarding which shows/events we attend, so add us to your "following."

Have a lovely weekend, everyone.

480 Minutes - Rumble-related Rerun!

Good morning!

Many many thanks to everyone who came out to Cafe du Nord on Wednesday specifically for the BAGeL Radio 7th birthday party. I really appreciate it. It makes me giddy to look back at the more than 300 (!) episodes of 480 Minutes, plus interviews and BAGeL Radio on-air acoustic performances. Who knew the little independent station that could...would...reach so many people? Not I, my friends. Not I.

Thanks also to everyone who came out to see the bands, the event co-sponsors (The Owl Mag and Future Sounds), my co-DJ (Carlton), and of course the bands (Jaguar Love, My First Earthquake, and Butterfly Bones).

Due in part to that party, which also celebrated the 5th anniversary of The Owl Mag and our first Rumble at Cafe du Nord, I didn't get nearly enough sleep this week nor have nearly enough time to compile a new episode of 480 Minutes, so today's program will be a rerun of a previously broadcast show. Next Friday (2/12) we'll have a new show featuring new stuff from Malachai (Bristol, England), Polysics (Japan), Seth Augustus (San Francisco, CA), and Cold War Kids (Long Beach, CA). See you then!

Oh, and if you are on Facebook please join the BAGeL Radio group. Just search for "bagelradio" in the search window, or click this link. Thanks!

"480 Minutes" - Unplanned Rerun

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I was under the weather and unable to produce an original show for this week, so today will be a rerun of a previously broadcast edition of 480 Minutes. In fact, there will be 4 different reruns run back-to-back-to-back-to-back, for those of you who might enjoy 30+ straight hours of me, babbling. The first runs from 9 a.m.-5p.m. Pacific Time. Do tune in.

There was a grand plan to follow-up to last week's smash hit "Best Music of 2009" edition of 480 Minutes with a "Best Music of the Oughts" edition this week. Then I got sick. Show fail. Alas, that special edition will have to wait until the new year.

Please check out the Best Music of the Year lists below. If you click a song name, it will take you to the song in iTunes, if you click an album name, that will take you to the corresponding CD on Amazon. If you prefer CD Universe, please use this link. You can also find an iMix of our Top Albums of 2009 (each represented by one song), and iMixies for our Top 50 Songs of 2009 as well as Top Songs 51-100. Using any of those links at bagelradio.com to buy music helps the artists and scores a commission for BAGeL Radio, so please, try to use our links as the your for all of your purchases (even non-music goods on Amazon!).

Thanks for sharing another great year of music with us here at BAGeL Radio. I saw some snarky year-end lists this year that stopped at 7 or 8 instead of the standard minimum 10, because, list authors claimed, there just wasn't that much great music released in 2009. Isn't it nice to have a clear view of just how wrong those who put snark ahead of the music really are?

Anyway, enjoy the reruns and sifting through the year-end lists, and best wishes to you and yours for a happy and healthy new year. See you in 2010.

480 Minutes - Thanksgiving Rerun (and Hide!)

As has become customary, there will be no new 480 Minutes program today, the Friday after the U.S. Thanksgiving Holiday, since such a small portion of out audience will actually be in their homes/offices to listen.

Instead we have programmed 4 recent episodes of 480 Minutes in a row beginning at the regular 480 Minutes time, Friday 9 a.m. Pacific, 10 a.m. Mountain, 11 a.m. Central, 12 noon Eastern, and 17:00 Greenwich Mean Time.

Enjoy, have a lovely weekend, and we'll be back with an all-new show next Friday, followed by our annual Best Music Of The Year episode (former Pick-O-BAGeL) on Friday 12/11.

480 Minutes - A Fall Classic Rerun

Today's program will be a rerun of a previously broadcast edition of 480 Minutes. This happens when the Yankees are in the World Series. It cannot be helped. Go ANSKY!

480 Minutes will be back with an all-new edition next Friday, 11/6.

So for this Rerun we are going to try something a little different -- instead of one 480 Minutes program repeated throughout today and tomorrow we will have 4 different previously recorded 480 Minutes programs play back-to-back-to-back-to-back. Serving suggestion: go buy a case of the energy drink of your choice and listen to hosted BAGeL Radio programming for 40 straight hours beginning at 9 a.m. Pacific Time (11 a.m. Mountain, 10 a.m. Central, 11 a.m. Eastern, 17:00 Greenwich Mean Time). If you guys like the strung together hosted shows we will consider doing this more often, perhaps during the overnight hours when a host to keep you company might be nice. Please let us know what you think at feedback@bagelradio.com.

"480 Minutes" - The Crazy Busy Week Rerun Edition

Between The Bay Bridged board of advisors meeting, The Lost season finalé, and DJing the Loquat show last night, there simply was no time this week to assemble the 480-minute marathon BAGeL Radio Friday live broadcast. I did review tons of new music including Apostle of Hustle, Black Hat Brigade, Black Moth Super Rainbow, The Breeders, Circus Devils, Conor Oberst And The Mystic Valley Band, Depeche Mode, The Do, Double Dagger, Eagle And Talon, The High Strung, Jake Cherif, Jarvis Cocker, Mariyln Manson (not safe for work!), Peaches, and Popup (either I only got through the letter P in my listening this week, or the second half of the alphabet bands are slacking!).

I look forward to sharing all that and more with you next Friday (5/22).

In the meantime today's program will be a rerun of the Friday the 13th edition of "480 Mainutes" from March which featured the BAGeL Radio debuts of new music from Obits (Brooklyn, NY), Dan Deacon (Baltimore, MD), Benjy Ferree (Washington, DC), Gliss (Los Angeles, CA), Bishop Allen (Brooklyn, NY), Eula (New Haven, CT), An Horse (Brisbane, Australia), The Hopefuls (Minneapolis, MN), Lemon Sun (Los Angeles, CA), Stardeath And White Dwarfs (Norman, OK), Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band (Seattle, WA).

Here is my one gig photo from the week -- Loquat @ Cafe du Nord last night (Thursday, May 14th). I went directly to the venue from work, so I did not have my real camera, but the iPhone takes some amazing photos, and this one is not too bad considering the low light conditions:

480 Minutes - Payin' The Bills Rerun

Happy Friday, folks.

I started a new contract job this week and it has kept me mighty busy, leaving little time to listen to new music and put together a new show for this Friday. Gotta pay the bills! So, instead of new live show today, you will be treated to a rerun. A really good re-run.

I will try to put together an abbreviated, concentrated hosted show for Monday containing this week's playlist additions. Who knows, maybe we'll call it something silly like "120 Minutes." Check this space Sunday night for an update.

No e-mails or IMs today, please, I won't be available to chat.

Here is my one gig photo from the week -- Green Day playing for the first time in 3 years, and they did so at a tiny (for them) 400-capacity venue, The Independent in SF:

Happy New Year

This week and next ""480 Minutes" will be a 'Rerun' of a previously recorded show. This year the day after Christmas and the day after New Year's day are both Fridays, so not too many people will be at their offices tuning in. With that in mind we're taking today and next Friday off from doing new, live editions of "480 Minutes" and we'll be back again live and in-person on Friday, 1/9/2009.

Please tune in from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time, but no IMs or e-mails today...well, at least not ones that require answers before Friday, January 9th, 2008. Thanks, and have a lovely weekend.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy new year to you and yours.

BAGeL Radio Tuesdays With Cory

Happy (almost) Thanksgiving, everyone.

Please tune in today for Absolutely Kosher Cory's show at 10am Pacific Time, it promises to be a fun one, and it's the only new hosted program this week because of the holiday. Of course BAGeL Radio will be broadcasting 24/7 as always, there just won't be a live edition of "480 Minutes" this Friday due to "Black Friday" historically being a very slow day for listenership.

Hopefully this particular rerun will whet your whistle for the 12/19/08 edition of "480 Minutes" which will feature the BAGeL Radio picks for the top songs, albums, local songs, local albums, and shows of 2008. (Nudge, nudge, wink, wink -- that's a hint about the content of this Friday's rerun).

Don't forget to tune in today and every Tuesday at 10a.m. Pacific Time for BAGeL Radio Tuesdays with Cory, and if that time is inconvenient for you the program is rebroadcast on Tuesday evenings at 10p.m. Pacific Time.

"480 Minutes" - Rerun of Best Music of 2007 Show

Happy Friday, folks.

I will be in transit today, so today's episode of "480 Minutes" will be a re-broadcast of a previously recorded show for the first time this whole year. The one we're going with happens to be a fan favorite, the 2007 Best Music of The Year episode, so please tune in and compare your 2007 year-end lists with mine.

No IMs or webcam today, but feel free to send in any comments or questions via e-mail and I will get back to you.

Tune in next Friday for multiple chances to win tickets for The Download Festival at the Shoreline Ampitheatre. The event is on July 19th featuring bands including Atmosphere & Brother Ali, Brand New, Mute Math, Yeasayer, Sia, M83, Mates of State, The Whigs, William Fitzsimmons, Cut Copy, Datarock, Flosstradamus, RJD2, Duke Spirit, Tapes n Tapes, Blitzen Trapper, Louis XIV, Airborne Toxic Event, and De Novo Dahl, amongst others, for just $20. . "480 Minutes" - Rerun Featuring Smile Brigade

Happy Friday, folks.

I will be in transit today, so today's episode of "480 Minutes" will be a re-broadcast of a previously recorded show. It happens to be a really good one, featuring Seattle band Smile Brigade stopping by the studio for a chat and an acoustic mini-set, so do tune in.

Don't forget that next Friday is that special, once-a-year show that features the unveiling of the BAGeL Radio top albums of the year, top songs of the year, and top Bay Area albums of the year. You'll want to tune in with pen & paper at hand so you can jot down those ever-so-perfect gift items for your music-loving loved ones.

No IMs today, but feel free to send in any comments or questions via e-mail and I will do my best to get back to you.

Oh, and thanks to everyone who came out to Bottom of the Hill last night for Ex-Boyfriends, Audio Out Send, and 20 Minute Loop -- how fun was that?!

Finally, some breaking news: BAGeL Radio will be broadcasting from the MacWorld Expo in January thanks to the good folks at San Francisco State University, where I teach a class in Blogs, Podcasts, and Internet Radio (next class starts 3/1/08). More details on the MacWorld broadcast(s) to follow.

"480 Minutes" -11/23/07 - A Rerun

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

In solidarity with our striking brethren, the Hollywood writers,, this week "480 Minutes" will be a 'Rerun' of a previously recorded show. The film and television industries are going through massive changes due to new technologies including digital distribution over the internet. The big studios are barely sharing these new revenue streams with the folks who create the basis of what they sell, the writers, hence the writer's strike that began last week.

Stand with the writers, help them get the pennies per download the studios are denying them. Thanks.

OK, while we really do agree with the writers and hope that you help them in their just fight, that's not really why today's show is a rerun. The real reason is that it's the day after Thanksgiving, and historically "Black Friday" is a very slow day for listenership. Over 75% of BAGeL Radio listeners are right here in the U.S., and about 80% of those U.S. listeners tune in from work. Since almost none of those folks are at work today, it makes sense for "480 Minutes" to take this Friday off. Perhaps that will change if someday I get a barrage of angry mail from overseas, or from the unfortunate souls forced to work in offices on Black Friday, but until then...reruns.

Hopefully this particular rerun will whet your whistle for the 12/21/07 edition of "480 Minutes" which will feature the BAGeL Radio picks for the top songs, albums, local songs, local albums, and whathaveyou for 2007. (That's a hint about today's show).

Please tune in from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time, but no IMs or e-mails today...well, at least not ones that require answers before next Friday. Thanks, and have a lovely weekend.

"480 Minutes" - A Rerun

This week "480 Minutes" is a 'Rerun' of a previously recorded show. Next week may be a re-broadcast as well, although my WIGM suggested that we co-host a remote broadcast from our honeymoon destination, so there may be a live edition after all. (This is not why I am marrying her, but a fine example of her greatness). It will depend on whether we can get a wired ethernet connection. If we cannot, 10/26 will be another rebroadcast of a previously recorded edition of "480 Minutes."

Please tune in from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time, but no IMs or e-mails today...well, at least not ones that require answers before November. Thanks, and have a lovely weekend.

CMJ 2006/No Live Broadcasts This Week

Apologies for the lack of BAGeL Radio live broadcasts in recent weeks -- I have been traveling and unable to get the stars to align in such a way that allowed for a remote broadcast. I am sad to say there will be none again this week as I am in New York for CMJ. Normally I love to do remote broadcasts, but this week I am busy with CMJ activities, so no live shows. Next week, however, there will be live shows on Thursday 11/9 (featuring a live acoustic set with The Heavenly States), and the return of "480 Minutes" on Friday 11/10.

You can find some of my CMJ photos here.
