New DVD + EP From The National

One of my personal favorite American bands of the 2000s is The National. Both of their last two albums (Alligator and Boxer) ended up as the #2 albums in the BAGeL Radio end-of-year charts in their respective years(2007, 2005), so it is most exciting to hear that any new National music will be forthcoming. In this case it is an EP of previously unreleased stuff plus a DVD filmed mostly during the recording of Boxer. Hat tip to The Tripwire for the heads up.

Check out the trailer below.

P.S. - It was so hard to pick a song to include as part of this post. Seriously, Boxer and Alligator are both exceptional, and there are plenty of worthy songs on their earlier albums, too. Check them out if you like what you see/hear in the trailer and over at my MOG page.

P.P.S. - They are amazing live, too. When they are on, it can be a religious experience. When they are ill and singer Matt (pictured above at Bimbo's in SF) can hardly sing, they're still great.

Dig The New Nick Cave

The new Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds album, Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! is playing here at the office. It's so good that it makes it hard to concentrate on anything else.

I'd been wondering what the next Bad Seeds would sound like after last year's Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds subset band, Grinderman, put out a raw and purile self-titled album about not getting enough sex, and this is not what I expected. There are Grinderman elements, but the overall record is way more pop-oriented than the side project or antything in the Bad Seeds catalog.

Check out the video for the title track/single below. It's a shame about the mustache (but then again, honestly, aren't most mustaches shameful, especially the ironic ones?), but the song is good and album is better.

Wombats Live On British TV

In the video below there's about a minute of a game show followed by The Wombats closing the show with an excellent rendition of their song "Backfire At The Disco."

I bet it wasn't Sunday T.V.

It has not been confirmed but it looks like Manchester (England, England) band Working For a Nuclear Free City will be stopping by the studio this Friday for a chat and possibly play an acoutic mini-set before their Noise Pop show at Mezzanine with The Rosebuds and Foxtail Somersault. More details to follow, in the meantime check out this video:

What Does Digital Freedom Mean To You?

Well, it certainly doesn't mean buying intentionally damaged media that won't play on the media player you got for your birthday. Nor does it mean trekking down to some giant store to buy a gift card that you have to take back home to redeem online for one of the 37 titles made available through this genius campaign.

This video from DigitalFreedom.org featuring Middle Distance Runner gives an example of what the landscape could look like for emerging artists in today's increasingly digital consumer society:

Wombats Video

All year long BAGeL Radio has obsessed over the Liverpool band The Wombats, particularly the song "Moving To New York," and now there's a video for that very song:
