"480 Minutes" - Hipsters Movin' On Up To The East Side
Lyric of the week: "I've given up on drinking/Except for the weekends/And a few days a week" -
Mark Kraus, "
The Weekends"
I spent most of this week on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. In all my thousands of years on the planet I'd never before spent an entire day up that way. It's really odd -- it remains, as it's always been, the least hip part of the island, and yet it is starting to become inhabited by hipsters. They seem to be the overflow from Williamsburg, now that the north-western part of Brooklyn has become insanely expensive like much of Manhattan. All of this would have been inconceivable when I was growing up in NYC. Bizzaro World, I tells ya.
Today's show contains a lot of new new wave. Like new bands who sound like they could have formed from the same primordial post-punk ooze from which crawled Depeche Mode, The Cure, The Cars, New Order, Blondie, etc.
Today's all-new 480 Minutes show will feature new music by Chelsea Wolfe (Los Angeles, CA, @cchelseawolfe), The Christine Jelly (Oakland, CA, @TheChristineJel), Cold Beat (San Francisco, CA), The Kickback (Chicago, IL, @thekickback), Little Racer (New York, NY, @LittleRacerBand), Michael Stasis (Los Angeles via New York and Philly, @beefstock), Pony Time (Seattle, WA, @ponyfuckingtime), Potty Mouth (Northampton, MA, @pottymouthmass), Rey Pila (Mexico City, Mexico, @reypila), Rudy De And a (Long Beach, CA, @QvoleCollective), and Wild Ones (Portland, OR, @wildonestheband).
