“480 Minutes” - RIP Steve Albini

Steve Albini of noise-rock bands Big Black & Shellac died of a heart attack this week at age 61. Albini notably produced (although he preferred the term “engineered”) the Pixies’ Surfer Rosa,” the Breeders’ “Pod,” & Nirvana’s “In Utero.” He had his own studio where he’d record baby bands, mid-level bands, & major label acts. He never took “points” (a percentage of sales) for his work, only a flat fee. He was highly critical of the recorded music industry, particularly how it stole from & lied to artists, as well as how it homogenized art & expression. He was usu spot on. He will be missed.
