"480 Minutes" - The Post SXSW Edition
This is the post-SXSW 2011 edition of 480 Minutes, which means that I saw a whole lot of bands last week. 63 shows, 61 bands, select photos here, couple of hundred photos here.
The best show musically was hands down a band from New Orleans called Generationals. Imagine the completely legitimate love child of Tom Petty and Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo) -- great songwriting, everything in it's right place, then wham! they add some avant garde sound or structure on you, not enough to be jarring but plenty enough to keep the song from being a retread of things you've heard before. I liked their album, the new EP is excellent, but it didn't all click until seeing them live. They have some tour dates in the Midwest in late April/early May.
The other top highlight amongst many was a band from Nashville called JEFF The Brotherhood. Do yourself a favor and go see them. They are on tour now heading up the East Coast of the US before heading west.
Today we will again be debuting TONS of new playlist additions including music from Carnivores (Atlanta, GA), Darlings (Brooklyn, NY), Delicate Steve (New Jersey), The Dodos (San Francisco, CA), Does It Offend You, Yeah? (Reading, England), Elbow (Manchester, England), The Heavenly States (Oakland, CA), Ian Moore and The Lossy Coils (Austin, TX), The Joy Formidable (North Wales/London England), The Mountain Goats (Durham, NC), Movits! (Lulea, Sweden), Otter Petter (Chicago, IL), Roommate (Chicago, IL), TV On The Radio (Brooklyn, NY), Typhoon (Portland, OR), and Wye Oak (Baltimore, MD).
