"480 Minutes" - The Purge
I had a conversation about this leadership vacuum with a Cult 45 member. Let me begin by telling you that although I believe her to be sincere in her convictions and she appears to be well educated, she seems incapable of critical thought. Her take is that she's thrilled with the situation, suggesting that the high-level vacancies were saving the country money and, besides, obviously everything is running like a well-oiled machine so we don't need those positions filled. She was certain that whichever unaccountable highest-ranking lower-level person at each department was handling everything just fine. When asked for evidence that "everything is running like a well-oiled machine," she faltered. When I suggested that such leadership positions are often less about day-to-day hands-on management and more about forward-thinking planning and preparation for unforeseen future situations, she stopped responding.
Somehow this is not a major news story, and certainly not this angle about our entire national security apparatus is adrift, perhaps protecting us for now, but certainly not on the lookout for new threats or more effective means of doing what needs to be done. Instead the mainstream media remains obsessed with a college admissions scandal which shocked no one, the IMF paying Ecuador $4.2B to hand over Julian Assange (which is kinda shocking, I must say), and of course the Mueller report which no one has seen except for Cover Up General Barr. Also Barr refused under repeated direct questioning whether he had given the report to the White House, so he has obviously given it to the administration, affording them nice head-start at weaponizing it before anyone else gets even a redacted glimpse.
