“480 Minutes” - Coup Part II

It has been a fun week learning that the newly unveiled running mate of Democratic candidate for President Kamala “Songs In the Key of Life” Harris, Tim Walz, is a fan of The Replacements, Hüsker Dü, & Prince. Before he ran for office he was in the National Guard for 24 years & was a beloved school teacher. As governor he lead the effort to require public schools to provide menstrual products & signed into law a program to provide free breakfast & lunch to Minnesota school kids, regardless of income.

Except for the fact that Joe Manchin likes him, he comes across like a good guy.

A reminder to consume corportate news critically: the Washington Post yesterday published an opinion piece that was all bullshit right wing talking points. As mentioned here previously, last month the New York Times published a "guest essay" with the headline “Why I Don’t Vote And Why Maybe You Shouldn’t Either” on Independence Day replete with facile arguments for giving up on representative democracy. They apparently published this garbage without checking to see whether the author had actually voted (he had indeed voted: shocker!). Since then they’ve changed the headline of the online version multiple times landing on “Why I Won’t Vote” & swapping out the author’s headshot for one that makes him look less like a Hitler Youth scout leader.

Meanwhile the GOP is building not get-out-the-vote efforts but election subversion efforts at the state level. It’s pretty clear from Trump’s repeated shout-outs to the Elections Board in Georgia that election-deniers now control that body (which, like the Supreme Court, is supposed to be non-partisan) & the such efforts are ongoing nationwide.

As many said at the time of the previous election, an attempted coup unpunished is a rehearsal. The democracy-subverters will take what they learned & avoid their mistakes this time.
