“480 Minutes” - Episode #800

The Queen is Dead & to all who grieve her passing I am sorry for your loss.

Trump’s chief strategist Pigpen Bannon was indicted in New York yesterday on charges of money laundering, conspiracy & fraud for grifting MAGA of tens of millions of dollars claiming the money was to “build that wall” that they were assured Mexico would pay for. “Wait, didn’t Trump pardon Pigpen?” you ask. Why yes, yes he did, for the exact same crime when federal prosecutors charged him in 2020. Unfortunately for the chaos agent, pardons only cover federal charges. These charges were brought by the State of New York.

The news isn’t all good — what we are learning about the utterly unqualified Florida judge currently running interference for the Orange Menace, aka her benefactor, with regard to the investigation into his theft of sensitive national security documents is mind-numbingly terrifying. After he lost the election the vulgar know-nothing con man — who still hasn’t met an excuse he didn’t like to explain why he stole said documents from the White House — gave this inexperienced, then 38-year old lawyer a lifetime appointment to the federal bench. Installed despite her obvious disdain for the rule of law she is now impeding the lawful & absolutely necessary-for-national-security-reasons investigation of her benefactor. Aileen Cannon has no business being a judge outside of a reality tv setting. From her thin resumé to gaps in her personal history to her admitted total lack of standing to do what she did to…oh yeah…her father-in-law being a Federalist Society fascist friend of Marco Rubio, this is more in-plain-sight banana republic-worthy corruption rotting democracy out from under us. She & the hundreds of other unqualified hyper-partisan judges with no allegiance to the U.S. Constitution or the rule of law will remain a threat to representative democracy for decades.

And now for something completely different: today’s show is episode #800 of the 480 Minutes program. It’s difficult to wrap my head around that concept, just as it was when we hit #700 during lockdown 10 weeks or so into the initial COVID-19 lockdowns. We had recently lost a sizable number of regular listeners whose routines of going to the office, putting in earbuds, & tuning into BAGeL Radio were disrupted & replaced with…staying at home with families and/or roommates. Slowly but surely many found their way back. Then a bunch of people looking for new music & community stumbled across our little community & stuck around, swelling the ranks beyond our previous peak. Many thanks to those newer listeners & to the many who have stuck with us for even longer.

Because last weekend was Labor Day weekend here in the U.S. there was no new show. Instead it was rerun after rerun all weekend long. I did not realize the episode selected to run in the Friday daytime time slot was the infamous “DJ yells at listeners” episode. During the original live airing I half-jokingly yelled something like, “Donate! Send me your money!” & it worked! Donations poured in (relatively speaking), & more recurring donations were set up, than any previous day in our nearly 20-year history. When donations picked again last Friday it was puzzling — reruns rarely evoke an uptick. I took the long weekend off from most radio work, so when I finally got around to reading the e-mails & notes I chuckled as the puzzle revealed itself. It was also a reminder that I need to yell at you people more. You have been warned…but first I’ll ask nicely:

Please consider diverting some of your entertainment dollars our way. Not all of the dollars (pounds, yen, euros, arcade tokens), please continute to buy music & concert tickets & other stuff that benefits the artists & entertainers you appreciate, but take a moment to compare how many hours you spend listening to BAGeL Radio vs. consuming other media & redirect accordingly. Or don’t, & get yelled at. Your call.

You can make a one-time tax-deductible (for U.S. listeners) donation, set up a recurring donation, and/or buy BAGeL Radio merch, it is all appreciated & it all helps. Thank you.

Today’s show will feature new music by Black Nite Crash (Seattle, WA, @BlackNiteCrash1), Dendrons (Chicago, IL, @DendronsMusic), The Homeless Gospel Choir (Pittsburgh, PA, @THGchoir), The Lounge Society (Hebden Bridge, England, @LoungeSocietyHB), Osees (Los Angeles, CA), & Preoccupations (Calgary, Canada, @Pre_Occupations).
