“480 Minutes” - Mizna

Instead of giving space this week to the too aggrieved to notice they are being fleeced by the people they keep voting for contingent, this week I’d like to start off with a personal story.

A Cat's Tail (sic)

This week I got an odd request from elderly neighbors -- a cat had gotten into their house, they couldn't find it, and they had no idea what to do if they did find it.

So they called me.

Armed with a pet carrier, a wand toy and a can of tuna, I began the rescue mission. After searching every room in the house I went into the only room I had not yet checked -- a room which, decades earlier, had been the bedroom of my older sister's best friend from childhood, Cindi. I looked in the closet, under the desk, under the futon, in every corner... Nothing. I was about to give up when I spotted the feline infiltrator atop a tall bureau.

I talked to it calmly, like a youth leader to a tweaked teen, assuring it that I was a friend. But the cat was understandably scared by unfamiliar surroundings, smells, and my giant silver beard. Each time I approached, it reared in fear and distrust.

I spent the next couple hours negotiating in good faith with my would-be feline friend. I offered it treats and tuna, in ever-increasing amounts. And in exchange for my patience and vittles, I used our time together to bare my soul and share some things which had been irking me recently about the world and life, in general.

Motivated either by pity for my woes, or worn down by acute hunger, she slowly inched closer to the food. Soon she was noshing on tuna. Nose twitching, eyes wide, tongue rabidly licking.

After two hours of therapy (mine) and feast (hers), and five minutes before my neighbors were headed off to bed, the cat was head-butting my hand. We were friends. Real friends, the kind you can call in the middle of the night to ask about a forgotten song lyric or vomit on without repurrcussion (sic).

A quick trip to the 24-hour pet hospital confirmed that she was microchipped but that the chip wasn’t registered. It had barely been two weeks since my beloved cat, Magilla, had passed away. Her sister, Jetta, had died only eight months prior to that. For the last two weeks I had been cat-free for the first time in 16 years. And suddenly, I wasn’t.

I took her home and named her Cindi.

I posted Cindi’s photo & info to the ASPCA site, the Petco site, socials in general, online groups specifically for lost pets, & made "Pet Found" posters, which I hung up on light poles around the neighborhood.

Shortly before I was ready to go out for the evening I got a phone call -- it was the cat's human. Turns out Mizna (fka Cindi) had been microchipped in Kuwait and the systems are not uniform across countries, which is why it had flagged "unregistered" when scanned.

Even though I knew full well that I should wait a few months before inviting a new furry heartbreaker into my life suddenly, there was Mizna, head-butting me in my own house. Just as suddenly, she was gone.

Thirty minutes after the phone call Mizna was reunited with her human. All my cat accessories went back into the closet. I was once again cat-free, happy this story had the best possible ending for Mizna, but not necessarily for me.
